Video review: Mad Catz Arcade FightStick Soul Edition
Feb 3rd 2012 3:11PM (Joystiq)Yeah, the key is to use quality parts. Since they use professional quality arcade innards, the main thing to worry about is the case and PCB, which I'm not sure has ever really been an issue with their parts.
That's why these kind of reviews always baffle me. This stick is no different than the MvC3, or the SF whatever sticks. I mean, this has less different about it, I'm assuming, than the difference between Doom and Doom 2.
Then again, perhaps I'm jaded as someone who built his own control panel from parts purchased at lizardlick.com, and instructions from the BYOAC forums and slagcoin. The latter is super educational.
Zelda: The Lost Oracle fan film captures imagination
Jan 31st 2012 3:23PM (Joystiq)Try it in HD and widescreen on a PC with Dolphin. It's amazing how ahead of its time this game is, considering the system it was released on.
State of the Western RPG
Jan 13th 2012 3:08PM (Joystiq)Yeah, NWN2 has been one of the best RPGs of the recent past...if we could get it combined with the TB mechanics of Temple of Elemental Evil, I think we would be close to having the ultimate CRPG experience.
I also want to speak out for Storm of Zehir. It is a party based game (of which there are so few these days, sadly) and you can make at least 4 PCs or just rely on NPCs, I believe. What I really liked about Zehir is that for all the streamlining of RPGs, they did it the best by keeping the depth of the NWN2 and D&D world, but making it easier to use. If people in your party have a skill based response in a conversation, you can select that, regardless of who initiated the discussion. The overworld map utilizes all the skills you would expect to see there, like survival and spot and hide and such...really slick.
That said, I just rolled up a character in MotB last weekend...a Bard, Rogue, Shadowdancer, and ultimately and Arcane Trickster. Looking forward to digging into this with my roommate soon.
But seriously, if there had been more content created for Zehir or ToEE, I would have little complaint with the state of CRPGs.
The Joystiq Joystick, chapter 1: Parts
Jan 10th 2012 4:18PM (Joystiq)Also, an arcade cabinet is a great way to learn how to do stuff. I hadn't touched a power tool in 20 years, since my 8th grade shop class, and by the end, I was using a table saw, router, and jigsaw with relative ease.
Two sites I would highly recommend when doing this are:
forum.arcadecontrols.com/
and
http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick.html
They were immeasurably helpful, and slagcoin was a great place to start when trying to figure out exactly what type of Control Panel you might want to make.
The Joystiq Joystick, chapter 1: Parts
Jan 10th 2012 4:16PM (Joystiq)I used a GPWiz 40 for my PCB, but I'm very tempted to hack some 360 controllers and tie in those controls, as well, as I would love to play some of the great remakes that exist on the 360.
I really just wish that Capcom would get off their highhorse regarding PC gaming, and continue to release their fighters there, as the cabinet is really where I want to be playing MvC3. There is only so much SFIV I can take on this thing.
Obama goes with Just Dance 3 over Dance Central, shames a nation
Dec 22nd 2011 11:26AM (Joystiq)My first thought was, wouldn't it suck to find out on the news what you were getting for Christmas vs. the surprise of opening it up.
I'm sure they have other things going on, but these dance games do fit their mothers push for more active children.
I lost 30 pounds a few years ago with a combination of DDR and eating more thoughtfully. DDR...it's better than nothing.
What motion controls could do for JRPGs
Dec 16th 2011 6:44PM (Joystiq)Take, for instance, all the battles where the baddies are blocking in a certain direction. You have to be quick to attack in their opening. But if your sword is already on their blocked side, you have to slowly move to the open side and then swing, so as not to accidentally swing at their defensive position and get stunned or whatever. I hate that so much...it just makes you feel like you are swinging wildly.
I'm not sure what they can do about it, all I know is that given the choice, I would not use motion control the way it is implemented now. I suspect that with greater processing power and fidelity of motion control we might find common ground...but until then, please give us the option.
The Simpsons Arcade Game classified in Australia
Nov 9th 2011 3:17PM (Joystiq)Yeah, me too...but it definitely hasn't aged well...with all the complaints for the XBLA TMNT back in the day, I definitely expect to hear people level the same complaints...
That said, I prefer TMNT over Simpsons arcade, but still happy to see it released finally.
Konami's social games made the first half of 2012 profitable, consumer sales down
Nov 7th 2011 3:42PM (Joystiq)I see the same thing for the regular edition, as well...really not sure what is up with them...shows it's out on the 8th, and scheduled delivery is 15th...that's a lot longer than the 2 days I paid for shipping!!!
Grand Theft Auto V trailer is here!
Nov 2nd 2011 11:58AM (Joystiq)That's funny, because after San Andreas, I thought to myself...imagine what they will do with the next gen consoles. And then we got GTA IV. Boo. Let's hope they can bring next gen to the current gen. I believe Uncharted has progressed steadily throughout this current gen...I'd expect the same for GTA.
