I'll take what is sure to be the unpopular position and say that I support AFK progression. It levels the 'player versus time' playing field, so people who have more free time aren't inherently more powerful than people with full-time jobs, families, etc. It also encourages people with more free time to do something else with it every now and then.
I would like to see some kind of gating that at least makes you, for lack of a better term, L2P. The rep grind in TBC was lame, but the attunement for places like Molten Core and the original Naxx were good, I think.
I've been enjoying the game a lot since I came back to it, largely due to being in a great guild with other people who love the game. Heck, even what they've done in the couple months I was MIA is enough to keep me here.
I completely understand your point of view; I almost didn't resub because I didn't feel like there would be anything for me to do, since I have limited time for group content.
It doesn't seem rifts and invasions offer the level-capped player anything other than achievements. I don't remember there being any level 50 gear available in exchange for planarite and shards.
I actually am looking forward to 1.5, though. Perhaps this planar attunement feature will be enough to get me out hunting again...
I think regardless of whether the big upcoming titles are highly successful, there will be a paradigm shift going forward. I believe we will see studios spreading their eggs into more baskets, and targeting several different niches of players.
Developers are slowly starting to realize that imitating WoW is not a strong business model. You're not going to take millions of subs from WoW. Blizzard had already been long-established with Warcraft 1/2, Starcraft, and Diablo 1/2. They basically were guaranteed at least a million subs just from players of those games. Nobody else (except BioWare) has that going for them. You have to start small and listen to your customers, like how EVE began.
