Battlefield 3 'probably' shipping with online pass
Aug 2nd 2011 5:21PM (Joystiq)This is the only sensible argument I've seen on the con side, except they will probably do the VIP access thing again, so most dlc will be free anyway. I would imagine activision loves it when a used buyer shells out $60 for dlc content. Bfbc2 only had one dlc that cost any money. Hardly anything compared to halo and cod.

Aug 2nd 2011 4:54PM (Joystiq)Competetive gaming has been the way to play games for thousands of years.. i.e. Chess, dominoes, cards. I played in speed run competitions of nes games as a kid, beat my friends in golden eye, and spent years playing counter strike. Not to mention trying to beat the high scores on galaga and pacman. I think the real trend would be story modes, which in my opinion is akin to reading a really good book.

Stores like gamestop get to double dip by reselling a product that they probably sold in the first place, while ea supports a gamer who didn't spend a dime to support server costs. I agree that the server will have one person per copy, they are just trying to recoup the cost of a server that will likely be running for many years.

two people + two new copies = $120 for ea
Dedicated servers aren't cheap, and they are very reliable.
