@foxhound I pretty much agree. The multi-player is kinda fun, haven't touched the campaign, though if you earn as much exp from it as it sounds I might run through it this weekend. Should'a rented it first, I probably would have picked up Armored Core 5 instead, but what's done is done and I'm going to stick it out.

As someone who IS knee deep in the FGC I have to say I don't believe MK was the best fighting game of the year, but I will agree with you that how far this series has come is definitely laudable.

This isn't some "clever ploy" to get US FGC members into a Japanese tournament, US players have always gone to the big events like SBO. What this is is an attempt to make sure the US doesn't write Japanese tournaments off after the debacle that was this years SBO.

They are not "accepted play-styles inherent to the genre," they are accepted tactics inherent to games from designers that don't care to put the work into it like Mike Z has. If it were possible to lift some of his code and drop it into any fighting game to eliminate infinites, unblockables, etc I'm sure a majority of the FGC would be for it.
