So, they just said "We want to make an adventure game. No, we don't what it's about... heck, we haven't even really planned anything, or designed anything, or even really discussed anything. We just want to make an adventure game. About something. Eventually. So, can we have some money?"
Really? People just gave them money for a project that's not even a project? Holy Snake Oil Batman!
I always thought it was weird that they decided to ignore religion. Glad to see they've come to their sense. Now if only they could fix the fact that the AI leaders have NO long-term memory...
I'd be curious to see how this could be integrated into other gaming genres. Imagine an MMO where your in-game quests resulted in your receiving e-mails from in-game characters.
Of course it wouldn't work for a fantasy game, but think about all the futuristic MMOs that it would really add something to. The Secret World would be PERFECT for something like this.
The best way for this to work would be if you didn't complete quests with just success, but if your failures also lead to quest completions. Thus, a quest would be completed if you save the village mayor, but the quest would also be completed if you failed to save the village mayor. This could lead to all types of immersive and plot-enhancing emails from various NPCs in-game. It could be an excellent way of judging your reputation with factions. You could get new quests by replying to emails. There's plenty of ways this could be used.
While people are saying this is creepy and weird (It's Japan, they're different from us, DERP), I say whatever. I think that it's fascinating and could be a huge (perhaps Massive) step in making games more interactive for players.
