Gearbox and Claptrap honor late Borderlands fan with eulogy, NPC in sequel

Nov 5th 2011 11:21AM (Joystiq)
I could never really get into Borderlands, but I really like the company behind the game. Sure, not everything they make is stellar, but they seem like honest, good people who actually care about their fan-base. I respect them for that.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City chasing down Leon on March 20, 2012

My problem with the Resident Evil series is not its change in perspective, game mechanics, et cetera, but more its shift in style. RE started out as a relatively western-themed survival horror game. It was, to a certain extent, believable. But, unfortunately, they Japanified it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be racist or anything- I love a lot of things about Japan, but they really over-did it. Particularly in RE5, things started to seem less like a believable western horror story and more like something that belongs in an anime show. I just couldn't take it anymore. Like I said, there are plenty of Japanese games I love, but you can't have such a huge paradigm shift in attitude and expect people with western sensibilities, like myself, to come along for the ride.

Now of course, even RE4 could be accused of this, but it still wasn't as prevelant as it was in RE5, and the game was just so damn good you can forgive it. RE5 on the other hand was like RE4 but unnecessarily slimmed down and filled with more anime-esque crapola that nobody (at least me) wanted to see.

Not everything needs to have tentacles burst out of it. Zombies were fine.

@Nook I agree. RE4 was a complete masterpiece in every sense of the word, but after that, they've definitely been dropping some lame titles. I can't really think of any Capcom game I've enjoyed since about 2006.

Funny thing is, Capcom seemed to be at its most creative during the Gamecube era. Something about that console really got them working. Amazing traditional RE games, RE4, Viewtiful Joe... The list just piles up.

Wonder what happened...

Sonic Generations pre-orders exceed all previous Sonic titles

@TurbineTech MW are my initials, it doesn't stand for Modern Warfare. Lol.

As for you other guys...

Yes, actually, I have played the demo. But here again, the demo is very, very short. From what I played, it was fun. But how many times has that happened in a Sonic game? Case and point: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. Don't get me wrong, I love the game to death, but every level other than the Sonic/Shadow levels was complete shat.

Sega doesn't seem to understand that Sonic doesn't need gimmicks to be good. Every single Sonic game (at least retail) from thew last few years has had some stupid gimmick that weighed it down. If they just went back to the core gameplay from the Genesis games or, hell, even Sonic Adventure (with the other characters removed), it would be fine.

Editorial -- Nintendo's creeping doom: how the company came to misplace $926 million

One problem smart guy: Sony is a gigantic company that sells more than just PlayStation. Their other products will keep them afloat. Nintendo on the other hand is only in the video game business, so for them to lose almost 1b is disastrous

The game looks fun, but honestly, I wish they would just dump the gimmicks. Why not just make a game exactly like this but with one single, regular Sonic? Why muck it up with all this other stuff?

Yes, of course Shigeru Miyamoto is involved in Super Mario 3D Land

Am I the only who, when reading this artlce, thought "This seems really backwards".

If anything, NSMB drew more influence from Super Mario Bros. 3 and even more so the original SMB. I mean, for christ's sake, the game is called New SUPER MARIO BROTHERS, not New Super Mario World.

As for SM3DL, the only real influences I can see here from SMB3 are the racoon suit and maybe a few other things.

To me, this game looks like a combination of the original Super Mario Bros. (complete with fireballs and flagpole) and Super Mario Galaxy, which frankly sounds awesome.

@TwEE Uhm, who says most Mario fans prefer 3D? I'd say that's quite the contrary...

And also, if you somehow forgot, or didn't actually read the article, there's this supaww kewwl game called "New Super Mario Bros." which is 2D, and was released not too long ago, soooo....

Not to mention, much of this game IS in 2D. Maybe not sprite-drawn, but the perspective is definitely 2D (not taking into account the 3D visual effects from the 3DS).

@mrantimatter Of course the 3DS screenshots are going to look bad. I mean, after all, you're taking a small, condensed screen photo from a handheld gaming device and putting it on a much larger computer screen. Also, the fact that its not in motion will make it look a lot worse, and the fact the pixel density probably isn't as high on the monitor as it is on the 3DS.

The game will look fine- probably somewhere between Sunshine and Galaxy, which is A-okay with me.

Nintendo expected to announce greater loss than forecast for first half of year

Oct 27th 2011 12:38AM (Joystiq)
Yeah, let's face it, Nintendo screwed up. They backed themselves into a corner. Creating a company around a casual gaming experience may work really well in the short term, but in the long term, it has dire consequences. 3DS should have had better graphics, another analog stick, killer apps right from the start, and double the battery life. And, now, of course, we have this cluster @#$% WiiU on its way.

WiiU makes no sense to me. It is identity crysis personified. The name, , the concept, and the design are all geared towards a casual audience, yet Nintendo firmly believes they are targetting the hardcore. Who in their right mind is going to forgo buying the next Xbox or Playstation in favor of a WiiU? I don't know about you lot, but I sure as hell won't be playing my Mass Effect, Call of Duty, or Dead Space on a freaking WiiU.

However, all that being said, there is still hope for them yet. While I think that the WiiU is going to bomb like iwo jima, the 3DS might be able to keep Nintendo afloat until the next console cycle. With games like Star Fox 64 and Zelda already on the system, and Super Mario 3D Land on the way, things are looking a little brighter. But still, there are problems that Nintendo needs to fix.
