Fezes are cool: An afternoon with Phil Fish

But has Phil Fish ever raised a campaign of hate against other people for the flimsiest of reasons. Nope.

Fezes are cool: An afternoon with Phil Fish

The game is about exploration, platforming and puzzles. It's a cross between Myst and Metroidvanias. The game world is huge and there are puzzles which require things like translating the games language like in Myst/Riven as well puzzles involving the beat of the background music. So while there no enemies, there is a lot to do in this game.

Phil Fish's next game won't be on XBLA, might be Kickstarter'd

Firstly he said modern Japanese games suck, then went on to qualify that statement by talking about things like hand-holding in a lot of games and excessive amounts of tutorial and a lack of innovation. Which I agree with in part when I look at parts of the games industry. He wasn't that rude to the Japanese dev (can't remember his name) and he apologised within his answer but leaving out those facts doesn't make for a good news story. This whole controversy is a storm over nothing built from one badly reported fact.

As for Twitter, not every one has the same sense of humour and a lots of Phil's recent jokes were aimed at the people creating Twitter accounts just to tweet sh*t at him. Really quite offensive stuff. Surely it is pretty obvious that most of the things he tweets aren't meant to be taken seriously or at face value.

I think that it was obvious when he used the term 'gamers' that he wasn't referring to all 'gamers' but to that specific subsection of people who play games who feel the need to try ruin people's lives on the internet for dissing a game. And when I talk about Mass Effect, I was referring to the thing about Jennifer Helper and not the DLC question. It's hard to call myself a 'gamer' ( a term I hate anyway) when things like these are still so endemic in our 'culture'.

It's strange how childish and vindictive the internet will act when the tiniest thing happens. Phil Fish acts brashly and says that he dislikes Japanese games to a Japanese designer who he then apologizes to several times including during his answer to the guy's question. The internet acts like it's personal mission to avenge this and start spamming his twitter with hate. Fish then makes several jokes on his twitter which are taken at face value and again the internet feels the needs to collectively sh*t on a guy's work/life, for example a person spent his evening last night subscribing the Polytron company email to loads of porn sites under the name 'Douchemaster' (it's up on his twitter account). How very mature and a great way to prove his statement about gamers right. I find myself hating gamers when they act like this or the way they do over things like Mass Effect 3/Bioware or any of the high profile examples of gamers crapping their pants recently.

But back to the subject of this article, I would throw Fish some money if he does Kickstart his new game. Played Fez at Gamecity in Nottingham last year and it is something special so I'm excited to see what he makes next. Spoke to him for a bit as well and he is nothing like the internet persona he has created.

@Sage009

I understood what the article was about but that doesn't stop it being a completely pointless article about 1 thing said at an hour long discussion which touched on a lot more interesting points than Notch putting an easter egg in Minecraft.

I'm sure glad I didn't want to know what they actually talked about in this disscussion. Congrats on writing an article about nothing.

Fez wins 2012 IGF 'Seumas McNally Grand Prize'

Mar 8th 2012 9:12AM (Joystiq)
@sammo21

He won a Visual Art award in 2008, then in 2011 he was selected in the PAX ten and Indiecade where he won a couple of awards. That's pretty much it. The Visual Art award he won at IGF was based on a build of the game that was only a few months old so the game was barely embryonic and is almost unrecognisable to the game as it stands at the moment so therefore I see no problem with him reentering the IGF. I think Fez deserved the Grand Prize at the IGF this year, the only other game I think that could've beaten it was Spelunky and it was probably pretty close between the games.

Tonight's nominees (and winners) at the 14th annual IGF Awards

@jeromey

Fez keeps getting nominated and winning awards because it is a fantastic game. 5 other awards given at the IGF are not publicly available yet (Spelunky, Storyteller, Botanicula, Super Time Force and Antichamber) but people only seem to kick up a stink about Fez. In fact Antichamber has won more awards than Fez including the first prize at Make Something Unreal. People seem to have a vendetta about Phil for no real reason.

Plenty of awards in the music/film industry give out awards to unreleased/unfinished pieces and why should the IGF be any different. Winning an award like this can mean the difference between finishing your game and having to give up and go back to working in a factory.

JS Joust creator's Dog the Wag puts Moves on butts

Brilliant, can't wait to try this out some time, Doug is pretty much the only person making games for the Move worth playing. J.S. Joust and the rest of his games are so fantastic and so amazingly fun to play.
