I'm always suspicious of "Generation A is like this' type articles and this isn't convincing me to re-evaluate that position.
1.) There's no evidence presented that Baby Boomers are more likely to get or retain a job when they compete with Gen Y people for the same position. I suspect that in most cases, Boomers aren't actually competing for the same jobs to begin with.
2.) There's no evidence presented that the over-education is causing Gen Y's problems. According to the last census, under 10% of the *total* US population had a master's degree. That's not really going to move the needle, even if the figure has increased a little bit.
3.) The argument actually presented seems to be simply that Gen Y is having a harder time paying down debts because they have more loans, a fact easily explained by the increasing cost of education.
The easiest explanation seems to be that a lot of people are graduating into an economy without any new jobs. The jobs that do exist are already occupied, largely by Boomers and Gen Xers. It's not remotely clear that foregoing additional education in order to be an unemployed bachelor's degree holder instead of an unemployed JD is a hugely obvious improvement.
I have a hard time getting mad at Activision for this, since apparently they were right that people are idiots. But I'll reserve the right to be irritated at the idiots.
I think that's a false choice: if Valve can't deliver the goods, it shouldn't be making episodic games. I'm all for reduced development costs, but if I'm not getting a better value this way, I'm not going to be buying the product.
There's a tendency now for cable TV shows to disappear mid-stream (like The Shield or Battlestar Galactica). Whenever you have a big gap like that, you're going to lose interest and fans. I think the same is true of delayed episodic gaming.
I don't buy this. If Nintendo can't figure out how to build capacity over the next two years, then it's got enormous problems. I'm thinking the analyst is just making this up as he goes along.
Omaribrooks - it makes absolutely no sense for Nintendo to restrict supply any longer. There's no reason to withhold consoles except - arguably - to build hype and boost future sales. But Nintendo's already got hype and it can't boost future sales if it's not willing to sell anything. So there's no benefit and it's costing them $50 per console in profit and countless dollars from the games they're not selling. That argument makes little sense.
I don't really disagree with the conclusions, but does a study that consists overwhelming of interviews with players really prove anything whatsoever? The gamers have an incentive to support gaming, for better or worse, and there's no independent empirical support offered for their observations. What people believe about games may or may not actually reflect reality.
It pains me to criticize a study that I think is probably correct, but I don't see that it's really proving anything.
It does make you wonder if there are planned remakes of Chrono Trigger, etc. in the works already though. Otherwise there wouldn't be much reason to hold them off the VC.
