EA clarifies Origin's ability to 'auto-add' games from other libraries

Feb 28th 2012 5:45PM (Joystiq)
@Uncommon Skyrim is Steamworks. You should have expected this when you installed. If you didn't already have steam, it would have tried to install Steam as well. I agree that this is somewhat intrusive, but it is not the same as what is happening with Origin. You didn't install Skyrim and then Steam searched your registry and AHA'd and saw you had Skyrim on your PC and added it to Steam. It's the other way around. Skyrim is Steamworks and links itself to Steam. Steam did NOTHING in this scenario.

Deadspace 2 is not Origin based. It has no link to Origin that I agreed to with install. Origin retroactively decided that it has the right to troll your registry for EA games and link to them without your knowledge or consent to conduct such a search.

EA clarifies Origin's ability to 'auto-add' games from other libraries

This happened with Dead Space 2 on my PC. EA's explanation doesn't make any sense to be honest. It seems obvious that Origin just looks up registry keys for games on your system and then adds links to them through Origin. Again, this could be an option that is available to the user: Would you like Origin to find all your EA content and link it to Origin so that it's all available in one frontend? Y/N. Easy. Simple. Unintrusive.

EA seems determined to gaffe with Origin every step of the way...

Sony Santa Monica (and more) helping with The Last Guardian

Feb 22nd 2012 2:50AM (Joystiq)
This doesn't really bode well. The fact that the game has wallowed in limbo forever, and the creators essentially admitting that they have no idea when the game will be in a releasable form to this very day, and now the changing of hands in the lead director and introduction of new hands to the production mix...ungh. Without a doubt, something called "The Last Guardian" is going to be released, if only to make use of the assets developed and recoup some of the costs. I doubt it will be anything like the game Team ICO envisioned 7 years ago when they started on this project.

Japanese hardware sales, January 16 - 22: Forbidden love edition

Jan 30th 2012 5:27PM (Joystiq)
Why does everyone always doom and gloom obnoxiously here? Vita DOESN'T have any good games right now with the exception of some console knock-offs. These knock-offs would not appeal to Japanese audiences. RE: Revelations just came out, going to majorly boost 3DS sales and hurt Vita launch. Monster Hunter on 3DS is obviously going to make 3DS dominate in the new portable market in Japan. Vita needs to get some games before it will find traction. It's not that people don't want the hardware, there just isn't anything interesting to play on it yet. On a side-note, why do systems always launch with zero worthwhile titles?

The only other annoying thing about Vita's lack of current appeal, means it will probably be a while before we see the dual analog redesign of the 3DS.

Alan Wake tells his story on PC in early 2012

Dec 14th 2011 6:07PM (Joystiq)
@Mcmax3000 This is not true at all. Remedy was always developing for PC with intent to port to consoles. Microsoft as publisher stepped in and decided they wanted the game as an exclusive for 360. So essentially there has been an almost gold version of this game for the PC sitting around for years. At least PC users will get DLC for free with the game.

Cliff B talks Fortnite: 'There's no dudebros in it'

Dec 11th 2011 5:27PM (Joystiq)
@b00mfargl3 I'm pretty sure it's an FPS/Tower Defense hybrid from the teaser with a material scavenging aspect between the 'fortnite' assault rounds.

Batman: Arkham City PC system requirements detected

Oct 22nd 2011 6:27PM (Joystiq)
Seriously? Excited for Arkham Asylum but the physx portion not so much. It's a good idea to have dedicated hardware for this sort of stuff...but where has it gone in all this time. Apparently it can push generic rectangles on you. Sparks in the one scene are obviously 2d rectangular sprites manipulated by the physx engine. The sheets of paper blowing around in the wind...rectangular sprites manipulated by physx engine. The shattering glass scene is the worst offender as glass DOES NOT LOOK LIKE a bunch of 2d sprites. I don't really think Physx is accomplishing what Ageia or NVIDIA intended, and I don't think some 3d transform on the most basic of 2d sprites is that impressive nor the effect that great looking.

Rocksmith review: Drop-D minus

Oct 19th 2011 4:00AM (Joystiq)
Sounded like a cool concept anyway, hopefully they will revised it and this can become something pretty intriguing. Despite Joystiq's pretty lackluster opinion of the game, they are quoted in the Rocksmith commercial as "Game plays really well! - Joystiq" or something to that effect...

Syndicate broadcasts 10 minutes of gameplay

Well, I disagree. Submissions in DX:HR? You mean the 2 per every major mission that you will run across regardless? There is no reason not to do them, and require no exploration on the players part to discover. I dunno, that just felt clunky to me. Might as well have just made them mandatory. The story was bland and pointless. The gunplay was worse and stealthing was more rewarding in gameplay and in experience. With Syndicate it looks like they want the gunplay to be foremost and all these tech aspects to facilitate and ACTUALLY augment this. You are also missing the point that the hacking is not instantaneous AND that hacking requires adrenaline...which are point rewards for gunplay. See how one thing fuels the other and facilitates a stream-lined fps?

I'm not saying the title will be great...but probably better than DX:HR. Since DX:HR is the very low bar that people are setting for 'great' games now, it STILL surprises me that these same people are panning this game.

Syndicate broadcasts 10 minutes of gameplay

Oct 15th 2011 11:38PM (Joystiq)
I think it's odd that everyone lauded Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but is panning this game. I didn't think DX:HR was that great, but the gunplay/hacking/tech aspects seem similar but more streamlined and more fluidly implemented than in HR which just felt clunky.

As far as the, "This is nothing like syndicate argument": What did you expect? It's not profitable anymore to make anything that a 12-18 demographic will enjoy unless it is essentially COD/easy assisted aim/iron-sight clone. That's pretty much the only thing that demographic buys as far as action titles. Maybe old school Syndicate style game could sell on XBL and PSN, but it wouldn't really hit the profit margin game companies are focusing on anymore nor target the largest portion of the demographic.

I do remember reading an article 3 or 4 months ago about a new turn-based squad game with some dev build images that were gorgeously rendered in 3D called Fray. There is also Xenonauts and U.F.O. coming out which intend to capture that XCOM theme and gameplay style. These games still exist, and people still make them.
