I still love the first stronghold with its isometric 2D deers running around between the bristling trees and rivers. One of those games I install once a year and play through again.
Yeah; it is ridiculous and silly, I totally agree with that .. but .. unfortunately these days a necessary evil. In business you *have* to be objective and secure any weak ends, otherwise you will get screwed over; there are more sharks out there looking for a quick win than there are sharks in the sea looking for blood.
It explains what rigmutton said; zenimax *has* to do this otherwise they will allow other companies besides Mojang to also start using the word Scrolls. And while Mojang's Scrolls is harmless, future 'scrolls' games might not. if Zenimax now allows it, they are in a much worse position when they will try to sue others lateron.
One clear point of confusion also seems to be Notch' offer to change names. If I understand that article correctly, Notch DID offer to change names but STILL insisted "scrolls" is still in the name. I.E. Adding an adjective/noun, which really makes it worse.
I think Notch' overfriendly comments by itself are now also damaging the good name of Bethesda/Zenimax which looks now like they are the 'bad guys'. But business is business.
USPTO said "Scrolls" is too familiar to "elder scrolls"; Notch disagrees even with that, i think it's a bit silly. All he need to do is REALLY drop "scrolls" and this whole case is over.
As FNor commented on the article though : "Notch really needs to shut up and let his lawyers handle this. "
Finally; I love minecraft to bits and skyrim looks awesome as well.
Syndicate (and X-Com) if done properly can be remade into a world class game without touching the fundamentals which made these games popular.
Turning a Strategy game into an FPS is just damn lazy, going the 'safe' route and milking the name. There obviously are no visionaries working in Starbreeze.
I want a game like the original syndicate; I want to select countries on a map again, control my agents from topdown; minigun the crap out of buildings and cars, enhance my agents with terminator-like stuff, persuadertron the entire city and then the agents so I can use them, turn my fe-male agents into hot emotionless terminator chicks.
And I want that game to be enhanced with today's possibilities. Excellent multiplayer. Havoc physics. Better effects. There is so incredibly much innovative things you could build ontop of the original syndicate formula .. it almost hurts to see them butcher it up into a casual FPS.
And I believe strongly the FPS will be nothing special; because as I said, they are going the safe route, so we will NOT see anything innovative from this game. Just another shooter with a story and cover system and some silly upgrades they will probably rip from Deus Ex.

Syndicate+FPS = Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Damn so disappointed.
