ted, totally true. i wish i could say that i haven't seen that type of behavior personally, but i have. it makes my head spin sometimes when i would think about how much money is just being thrown out the window on a few projects i've been involved with. as an employee, i just kept my head down and prepared myself for the worst (which of course did eventually come).
This isn't a "trailer" or "gameplay footage", or even an attempt by 3DRealms to have DNK "picked up". This is a guy's demo reel who clearly spent a lot of time working on the game. Who knows how long he was employed by 3DRealms. Please keep in mind that this is ONE person out of a crew of possibly 20-30 (maybe more?) animators and artists.
Its easy to sit here and say "eff you 3DRealms! They got what they deserved!", but the reality of this situation is that the studio's closing left a lot of people out of a job. Getting the pink slip is no fun, I can tell you that. I'm sure these guys will land on their feet as from what I can see from this reel, 3DRealms had some talented people on staff.
its a big deal to people who happen to be stuck in dead zones who cant' get any coverage at all. for me, i get zero coverage with verizon in my new place, so i'm switching to t-mobile and this may be a life saver for me.
i want to second and third the thoughts up there reguarding the "uncanny valley" effect. a buddy of mine at work sent this to me today and i havent been this blown away with CGI since seeing eye movement test animation for final fantasy: spirits within. however the moment that model starts to move, problems WILL arise. modeling in CGI is one thing, rigging and then animating it are two totally different things.
disney did NOT produce any bluth sequels. most of his work is property of universal pictures, and he was considered competion to disney. additionally, most of the TV series and sequels were doe without bluth and gary goldman's involvement.
the biggest problem with the console versions seems to be a timing issue. the arcade versions seems to be tighter at registering a joystick move. i've found that the multiple home versions (from the PC to the consoles) the timing isn't there and causes frustration to the player.
i got a buddy who's bedroom looks like that shot at the end of "raiders", but instead of historical relics, the boxes are filled with toys and comic books.
