PSN's classic JRPGs: What holds up?

@Sarge

Dragon Quarter?! I thought I was the only person who EFFING LOVES THAT GAME. Easily one of my favorite dungeon crawlers ever.

"nor do I think the voice acting is bad."

You just lost ALL credibility.

@KingRanger

I respect your opinion, man, and I love other Grandia titles, but I tried to play Grandia for the first time fairly recently, but the awful localization, played out, poorly paced story, and incredibly bad pacing (even with a fast forward button) made me give it up about half way through.

Oh yeah, and the voice acting? It never stopped being offensively bad on my end. The OST? It's alright, but I've never been a Nroiyuki Iwadare fan, really.

My wife recently played CT for the first time and loved it all the way through. I don't think it rides on cred and nostalgia alone.

I felt the same way about 2. 3 was everything I wanted it to be, though! I was really bought in to the story enough to eat up whatever they fed me though...

@John Z

I really felt like FFVII was only successful because of the boundaries it broke. The materia system destroyed character individuality, the characters were largely obtuse and bland, and the story remains overhyped solely due to its popularity.

Then again, it broke those boundaries and deserves credit. It's like, the Led Zepplin of JRPGs. I respect them and everything, but damned if I waste my time listening to that antiquated, crunchy mess :P

@garnsr Suikoden 4. Sailing. Omfg.

If I recall correctly, including random encounter time, it took me more than twenty minutes to reach my FIRST DESTINATION in that game. Aside from awful pacing, it just didn't really have that powerful feeling that S1-3 had :(

@SpecDotSign Tri-Ace is dope. Star Ocean 1-3, Resonance of Fate, VP2, Radiata Stories.... I'll let you rag on Infinite Undiscovery and Star Ocean 4 all day long, but I wouldn't call that a bad track record.

I think a big problem with tri-ace nowadays is Squeenix. They made a couple of sub-par current-gen games under them, and then they made Resonance of Fate under Sega, which by the way is effing amazing.
