Thompson receives 'Jacklash' in a week

Apr 21st 2007 1:17PM (Joystiq)
The only bad part about this is it took 32 innocent lives to show what an attention grubbing waste of human flesh that he really is to the res of the world.

I'm glad people are finally realizing the absurdity of his statements, but it shouldn't have taken this long nor something this tragic.

Thompson is no doubt reading this article, and if he's reading these comments, I just have to say he is a pathetic excuse for a lawyer, a Christian, and a human being. The fact that he tries to cash in on innocent lives is nothing short of disgusting.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup: poison mushroom edition

Mar 4th 2007 2:08AM (Joystiq)
@ 20, and 21:

Scott Ramsoomair cleared things up about that strip he supposedly ripped off of me. So let's kill this off before he get's labeled as some thief that he isn't. I'd hate to feel guilty for something he doesn't deserve.

Gaming comics tend to share the same subject matter in jokes from time to time. Kay? We're not all Penny Arcade that can find out how to work in "the spreader" into a Splinter Cell joke. GTA has a bazillion wanted level jokes, Mario has the mushrooms, and there's more Jack Thompson spoofs than I'd care to know about. This one is labeled as him stealing my joke. Why?

For one reason, the smoking subject matter. I used cigarettes and he used some vgcats fashioned inuendo, but we both shared the same word with different variations. Another reason is probably our constant appearance at Joystiq which was something that sent up a flag for me. But you know what? There's a whole lot more to webcomics than this site and as big as people think I am, (I'm not BTW) I'm still just some dumb kid that runs some obscure webcomic that most of the internet has never heard of, and the same goes with level 99. If it were something Penny Arcade, or PVP, or CAD had done 5 weeks beforehand, then yeah, he's a theiving little jerk. But it wasn't. It was written by me, and most of you don't know who "me" is.

Scott Ramsoomair says it was coincedence and was nice enough to say that publically when he could have just as easily said "I don't need to deal with this crap" and brushed it off like bad dandruff like others might have done and I thank him for that.

So let's nix the theory of that being a stolen joke. There were three coincedences of that same joke, and I'd wager that there are probably more than that that we haven't seen that are more obscure than Fanboys or Level 99.

Please? He doesn't need this crap.

Hard questions: Wii novelty and drought in effect?

Feb 18th 2007 1:20PM (Joystiq)
I wouldn't make a big deal about the drought. The 360 and the DS both had it much worse, and the PS3 has it worse than the Wii right now. What was it? Three months until a single new release came out on the Ds? One month intervals for the 360s game releases?

The Wii's not getting a motorstorm or a virtua fighter, but it's getting games. Sonic and SSX this month? People always seem to forget them. Next month the Wii's getting Super Paper Mario.

Mountains out of Mole hills at this point.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup: have a heart edition

Here's a comic that's pretty gaming related. It's called Looking for Group:

It's by the same guys that does least I could do, and it's some top notch stuff. Not fully gaming related aside from a few D&D-ish references, but a worthy contender none the less.

Wii Zelda reaches one million in US sales

@ 123

It's like Sony is doing bad, but here's whats good about them. And Yeah, Nintendo's doing great, but they're not exactly saints. I'm just trying to point out both sides of the argument and defend joystiq from flack they don't deserve (except Vlad. He fishes for attention).

And the remotes Nintendo announced won't be made by nintendo? That's odd. I suppose it's easier for them to let other people make stuff then screw up their production line.

And I apply to all the categories myself. Not hating on people. I got my mario kart fix like everyone else two weeks ago. I own 3 copies of Oot and I'll probably end up buying it on the VC just so I don't have to load a disc when I want to play it. Yeah, I'm that lazy.

And while people are talking Wii and GCN versions, I'd recommend trying them both before buying.

The wii controls are great with projectiles, but the sword play is delayed (loads of fun fighting ganon with that) and there is no control of the camera at all. The gamecube verson has the camera control Wind Waker had, but loses the immersion of sword swinging and ease of shootin arrows. Even trade offs but you'll have to figure out which you want to trade and what to keep.

Wii Zelda reaches one million in US sales

Joystiq doesn't hate Sony. Sony has just been hitting a bunch of snags as of late, while Nintendo has been getting praise from people who have never even played a video game.

Sony, aside from a few modest execs, has been very arrogant on how they've been handling things and Nintendo, as arrogant as they used to be, are finally taking things modestly and that's just what people see.

Is Nintendo perfect? No. They're a bunch of blood suckers that have milking money down to an art form.

"Wii mote with batteries? In a few months we'll sell you a new model with a rechargeable one!"
"Buy this game again, again!"
"Slap mario on a sport and they'll buy it."

But their console is a friggin blast to play even with sub par software, and it's dirt cheap in comparison with the other two. This is not bias. It's just an honest observation anybody can make. Joystiq's journalistic integrety would be on the line if they sided with one company (see Vladimir Cole) and held up their middle finger to the rest. They have a PSP fanboy section and a PS3 fanboy section. They got your back.

Wii Zelda reaches one million in US sales

Feb 9th 2007 4:43PM (Joystiq)
No, No, No. I don't think the 3D Zeldas suck. In fact, I think Wind Waker is by far the best in the series. Not my favorite (that does go to the 2D LttP), I just acknowledge greatness.

The story was very badly done. Why? Because it's pretty much all over before you ever pick up a controller. Everything is done in flashbacks. In OoT and WW you effect the overall story and it progress as you progress. In TP they just spoon feed you information every couple of steps you take. It also suffered from poor localization, but I won't get into that as that would merit spoilers.

Number of temples means moot to me. If number of temples meant anything that'd go to LttP for having 10 and 11 if you count hyrule castle and 12 if you count going there twice. I didn't like the TP dungeons for the simple facts that they were just OoT 2.0 (forest temple again, lava temple again, water temple again with the iron boots again with the water tunic again, etc.), and that none of them made any sense.

In Wind Waker and especially Ocarina of Time, the temples had back stories to them and added the settings. Wind Waker made up for not having the back stories by using each temple to tell one or two minor stories and using them to add to the over all story as a whole. Every thing came into play in the end of OoT and WW.

TP lacked both of those elements and the amazing cast of characters that OoT and WW had. Midna was great, but it was vert flawed to have the entire story rest on her shoulders. The temples seemed to be nothing more than conveneintly placed puzzles that you had to go do something there because for some unexplained reason (OoT and WW both had reasonings behind this as well) a convieniently placed monster, in a convieniently placed dungeon, had the conveniently placed treasure that you just so happened to need at the moment.

OoT dungeons all resulted in Ganon ticking everyone off and kicking everyones dog. WW temples resulted in the similar. TP temples had no reasoning both in story and in setting. The "city" in the sky was nothing more than a bunch of grey blocks with the occasional chicken wire. Gerudo Prison? Tony Hawks playground. OoT and Wind Waker didn't suffer from that.

Music was actually pretty minimal. There were two very good scores, and one of them was used three or for times. Everything else, like you said was pure homage. That's good, but Wind Waker did it better. As soon as you got onto your boat your ears were rewarded with triumphant music. As soon as you went into combat, music sounded, and everytime you hit an enemie fanfare sounded. I'll never understand why that was taken out. Even Ocarina of Time, a game about eight years old now, had more music. OoT and WW even had music weaved RIGHT into the story.

Gameplay wise, aside from the monotony and straying away from exploration which was what made the series so great, yes. TP beats the others. The advancements in the Iron Boots, the horseback combat, and touches like that are where it shines. But really, that's about it. As much as I hated the boat travel in WW, it brought back the series to its 2D roots of exploration. If they made it smaller and less time consuming than it would have really shined.

I think the art direction was terrible, but I'll keep that to myself as most people would right that off as personal taste. I will say that the cell shading made the most gorgeous boss battles the series has ever seen, and it added to the mood of the dungeons. The art style, though realistic and gritty as it was, was bland in boring. I hate to be the guy that compares apples to oranges with last gen and next gen, but Gears of War is a wonderful example of realistic with a good artistic direction. Graphics aside, everything stood out, and everythe ing was memorable from the enemies to the smallest rock. TP's art style was bland, dreery, and made everything blend in boringly aside from a few eye catching moments like the colorful Occo shop.

Also:
Hopskotch before getting the master sword
No Closure
Loads of contradictions
annoying wolf game play (in a year people are going to be debating on which was worse: playing as a wolf or riding a boat)

So yeah, I have my reasons for saying it's the worst. It's not a bad worst to have, but it's not the best. There's no way it's the best other than personal opinion and I look beyond that to the point where I acknkowledge Majoras Mask was better and I didn't care for that one at all.

To the guy that said "How can a game sell a million and be garbage?":

Not saying you're wrong (you're not), but 50cent bullet proof sold a million in a weeks time and it was a heaping pile of crap.

Wii Zelda reaches one million in US sales

Feb 9th 2007 3:05PM (Joystiq)
Best Zelda ever? After playing it front to back, I'd strongly argue that it's the worst, and with good reasoning.

It was nothing but slip shod version of Ocarina of Time fan service to make up for Wind Waker and it did a very bad job of so many things Wind Waker did right with the series. It added redundancy(now with bug killing!), nothing made sense, it took away exploring, was insanely linear, was too drawn out (now with bug killing!... again!), took away music in enemy encounters, had a very badly told story (flash back flash back flash back flash back flash back flash back flash back), ruined the awesome characters like Zant by turning him in to some ranting myspace child, Ganon was a putz compared to the N64 version even, it might have had a worse ending than Halo 2 (spoiler alert: nothing happens)and the graphics ranged from great to average even as far as the GameCube is concerned (you only need to look at flawless graphics of RE4, Crystal Chronicles and Wind Waker to see that there's no reason for that). Just a big step backwards for the series.

It did a bunch right though, and I have to acknowledge that. Midna is easily the greatest character to ever appear in the series (what I wouldn't do for a plushie), when it had good music (rare as it may be) it was beutifully done and added to the mood signifigantly, the river rafting mini game was drop dead gorgeous, and Epona was amazingly brought to life.

That said, the worst really doesn't mean much when the rest were so great. That'd be like saying a B+ student is worse in a class of straight A kids. TP was B+.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup: Bleach edition

Who to vote for?

The regulars were good as usual, and then Tip of The Sword had the clever Zelda parody, Quantz was funny as always, and you even got Real Life in there. Penny Arcade, I suppose. Mario Party truthness.I'm in with the in crowd.

Yeah, the F@NB0Y$ strip was more for the people that make gaming comics than anyone else. We're all topical little whores. :P

Jack Thompson faces disciplinary action

Feb 3rd 2007 5:01PM (Joystiq)
Because Thompson has nothing better to do than googling his own name, reading a gaming news site he hates, or subscribing to it's RSS feed, you can be ready for:

a) A nasty letter from Jacko himself stating how important he is, and how he'll get the last laugh (still waiting on the delivery from when Penny Arcade slapped you in the face, Jacko).

or

b) A lovely post from Jacko himself with whatever letter he sent to some obscure organization/group/official that somehow ticked him off on any given day (read: made lots of money).
