Exact same thing happened to me.

I picked up the first game on a whim at Best Buy, just wanted to try something new and hadn't heard anything about the game so I gave it a shot.

I played until the Mako mission where you're driving along the highway killing the Geth. I couldn't stand playing that game another second after that.

Picked it up a year later and never put it down. Played through it 4 times until I finally got the story I wanted.

Playing my third ME2 playthrough in anticipation of ME3 right now!

The Collectors are the ones who gathered humans to harvest for the Reapers. And then Shepard waltzed onto their ship and (at least my Shepard) destroyed their human reaper prototype.

The Reapers are the ones who like to blow sh*t up every 50,000 years and their trigger fingers are gettin a bit itchy after that.
