@Granger Ok here's the opinion of someone who poured 300 hours into Skyrim. Surely if someone can understand the problems Skyrim had then it HAS to be game developers right ? So as game developers, why didn't they acknowledge the incredible amount of quest-breaking bugs the game has and take that into account ? Why should we encourage lazy implementation, poor ports , poor optimizations and the necessity to install some mods to make the game tolerable ? (skyUI, better shadows, HD texture fix, skyboost) My guess is that the developers were overwhelmed by the scale of the game as it is easily one of the biggest games ever created in both size and content, comparable to Morrowind, and chose to ignore the technical flaws that hindered the experience.
Skyrim tends to be as great if not greater than Morrowind, but does a lot of things wrong, there were no HUD quest markers in Morrowind, you had to use your brain to figure out where to go, you didn't feel like you were "destined to save the world!" like the Dragonborn, you could play just as any lone wanderer and explore whatever you want, it took longer to be the focus of the main quest (which was better than Skyrim's main quest). Almost all the questlines in Skyrim, save for TG and DB, left more to be desired, especially the Companions and College of Winterhold but some "quests" did not have markers or rewards and they felt really like Morrowind where the reward was the quest itself.
I could go on about how Skyrim lacks modern RPG elements but I think that's enough ranting...
@CoconutSkittle The migration of the casual gamer from consoles/handhelds to tablets is something to take seriously. The deciding factor whether the iPad can be a "true" gaming platform will be the direction third-party devs will take at the end of this gen, which is becoming clear by the day.
Lat month Apple's stock price surpassed 500$ per share and for a good reason, there were rumors floating around about the new specs of the iPad 3 and how it's a huge upgrade to its predecessor, same for iOS5.1 software-wise. Well it turns out it's true, Apple are not afraid of how expensive it will be, They own almost 70% of tablet market, one of the main reasons being their presence in emerging markets in South-East Asia. They are one of the few who can afford to give a ridiculous price range for their products. And it seems like they're aiming for a AIO device, including gaming. If this is not the biggest threat to handheld gaming, i don't know what will be.
@mcnerven I guess you didn't experience the Sonic advance series, sonic unleashed/generations/colors, F-zero GX (technically made by Sega) platinum games, valkyria chronicles, etc.
