The Joystiq Show - 029: Ken Levine and Tim Schafer

Mar 30th 2012 4:48PM (Joystiq)
@XAV
Awesome! The worrying thing to me was the way that the shows between the old Joystiq Podcast and your arrival (Xav) were structured. There was generally a bit of stuff at the beginning for the layman who likes video games, but whose professional life and aspirations have nothing to do with them whatsoever, and then a bunch of esoteric interviews that had no broad appeal whatsoever to someone like that... it seemed an odd way to structure a podcast that was, originally, intended for fans of games, not aspiring developers etc.

In short, I'm excited to hear what you guys think about games, what you think about the industry etc. Not what people IN the development industry think about making games etc. I come to joystiq because I like your opinions on stuff, not because I want to know about the nuts and bolts of game development. Again, I know I don't speak for everyone, but I am psyched that you guys are going back to a more lighthearted, conversational style.

The Joystiq Show - 029: Ken Levine and Tim Schafer

Didn't you guys just revamp the whole show after you scrapped the Joystiq Podcast?! Why are you constantly striving to be more serious and boring instead of entertaining and fun? The best iteration of this show was the original with Chris, Justin and Ludwig being ridiculous. Everything since that was scrapped has been disappointing.
I'm sure I'm not just speaking for myself when I say that a lot of us that listen are not interested in technical, videogame design insider stuff involving chats with devs about the challenges of game mechanics and dealing with kickstarter money...
Many of us don't work in the industry or aspire to be game devs, we just like games and want to hear funny banter about said games. The further you get from that, the less I care about this podcast. As it stands now, I listen to the funny 10-15 mins at the beginning of the podcast and then turn off when the interviews come up. If the entire show is just going to be interviews and industry insider stuff then that's the end for me.
I'm sure there are people who love this stuff too, but I'm curious how many of the old Joystiq Podcast listeners still even bother to listen to these anymore.

BioShock Infinite's 'Boys of Silence' are awfully loud (also: terrifying)

@BernardMarx
So I take it you've never played a Bioshock game, then? These kinds of mechanics are present in Bioshock 1 & 2, albeit in a different form than this, and weren't slipshod in the slightest.

Pretty sure that should read "$ome pretty compelling argument$"

The Rhythm Of The Quest in Fallout 3 and New Vegas

Bear in mind that the ammo construction mechanic was mainly intended for playing hardcore mode. In hardcore all ammo has weight, so you can't carry a million rounds and tons of guns. You need to plan. Hardcore mode makes FONV a completely different (and MUCH more engrossing) experience. Try it out. I played it once and now when I play regular mode (or FO3 for that matter) it seems far far too easy and much less entertaining.

Join the riverside community of ... Riverspring in Game of Thrones on May 15

Riverspring? It's a very odd choice to try to build on an incredibly successful franchise by setting this rpg it in a town that doesn't exist in the books... they might have considered the fact that someone might notice. That choice instantly made me skeptical. Odds on this game being a terrible cash-grab? Fairly high.

Why silly JRPG dialogue may not be a problem

You really need to play FF 9. It's a terrific game and way better, IMO, than FF 8. I could understand if you wanted to avoid X or (especially) X-2 and XII. But 9 is a classic. Play it sometime.

Game of Thrones trailer warns of a coming chill

Yeah, this game is really not up to par graphically at all. Definitely seems like an attempt to cash in on SOIAF while the gettin' is good. Even if the story is good, I'd have a hard time playing a game that makes a fantasy world that I love look this terrible.

Skyrim trailer transitions concept art to in-game footage

@Korbie I hope so. I was wondering whether it was the game score or whether it was a standalone piece. It's fantastic either way.
