There have been a lot of elite clones over the years but no-one's ever recaptured the magic of the original. I'm cautiously interested but not wildly optimistic. The word Elite is synonymous with over-ambitious vapourware, as in the phrase Elite IV.
@Lerkero Yes, that is why Bethesda was suing. They could hardly let Notch trademark the word Scrolls unchallenged. Not that I understand how anyone can trademark just a single, generic word like that but apparently they can and now Bethesda have.
@AnimeGirl16 It's not a question of entitlement. A game that can't be resold is clearly worth less to me than one which can. Second-hand sales allow the market to find it's own price for the product rather than letting the publisher charge whatever it wants. This is good for both parties. Trying to fight the market will get you nowhere. When there's real proof that game companies are losing out significantly because of second-hand sales, I'll be more sympathetic.
@gettinmoney662 There is a clear economic difference. With piracy, the publisher gets nothing. For a second-hand sale to take place, there must already be copies of the game in the market, so the publisher must have got some money for it. The fewer first-party sales there are, the higher the second-hand price will be and thus, the more the publisher will be able to charge to compete. For second-hand sales to drive the price down, either there must have been many first-party sales or the product was over-priced to begin with.
@DirkHammerHulk @CARmakazie Wow. From arguing about who's shot the most guns to out-grammar-naziing each other in just a couple of posts. Pure Internet. I love it.
@Shadowbender "Imagine what a PCs would be capable of..." That's a slightly loaded question. What would a $400 PC be capable of? For most people, the answer would be not a lot because they're buying laptops and tablets these days. The growth of the mobile computing sector has given this console generation a little extra breathing room.
I think it's an interesting question to ask if a new console generation really would have the power to wow people at first sight. When this generation came out, people were more impressed by the Wii's waggle factor than the amazing new graphics power of the 360. There's the law of diminishing returns coming into play here.
@BillyBongThornton Are we really that cynical now? He's hardly the first or most prominent person to come out against SOPA and I don't see this move spawning a flood of sales of Serious Sam: Double D. In the games industry, controversy is usually the far better route to stardom.
See, this is how to do it. Polite, not aggressive. Respecting of other people's point of view. Using the already existing, widespread opposition to SOPA as effectively and vocally as possible without going nuts and creating a backlash. Lots more of this please.
@Faceless Troll Wolfenstein was a good game but Doom was the game that spawned the FPS genre. It was the commercial success of that game that other developers really tried to cash in on.
