The XB360 controller software *is* on windows update. When you plug it in, it will ask you if you want to check for drivers online, and it will find them.

At least on the XBOX1, all 8.8gb isn't available to developers, and there isn't any reason to believe this has changed: http://layouts.xbox-scene.com/main/docs/optimize.htm
