One of my big problems with FXIII's story was it's entry point. I do think there was potential for a decent story there, but I feel like players started in the middle of it, or something. And this gets to character development, but for some reason we were supposed to care about the plight of the characters before we got to know them at all. I didn't think there was a sense of a sweeping narrative that starts out small and sucks you in. The stakes never felt high.

I can tolerate a lot of cliches in narrative when I'm playing a video game, and I don't expect the same from a video game story that I do from a novel. But I have to feel invested in the characters somehow, and I haven't felt that in many games for a while.

@chuge This is exactly how I feel. I've never been big into monster collecting, so I'm not horribly excited about it.

Both Noel and Serah don't really appeal to me, at least not now. I hope that changes during the game because no matter how much I like the gameplay, etc, I can't spend that much time with characters I don't care about.

I don't mind linearity. I think the problem is, and I haven't finished the game yet, the story. I keep waiting to feel invested in it, but I don't. Whereas in some other FF games, it felt like you started off small and got swept in, this one feels like you just get dumped into a conflict with no real reason to care about it. For me, this might have something to do with how the plot starts, not sure.
