I don't want to be a Negative Nancy, but to be perfectly honest, Insane doesn't look that...insane. Maybe I've just been broken by years of playing Cave games, but one of the most important aspects of a shmup for me is the nail-biting difficulty and subsequent feeling of accomplishment when finally clearing a stage without taking any damage. The bullets here travel in lazy and predictable patterns. It certainly looks nice, and it'd be a good way to get newcomers into a genre that his a pretty steep learning curve. It's just not really a game for me, I'm afraid.
@(Unverified) You're correct. Visually/aurally Sonic CD is easily the best of the Genesis-era games, but the level design doesn't really hold up. There isn't as much opportunity for speed as in the other games, so the platforming doesn't feel very rewarding. The Past/Future thing is cool in theory but because of the level design it's really hard to make it work
