Wait ... what's up with GRAW's achievements?

Dec 13th 2006 9:02PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I'd like to see some really lame non-achievements worth 1 point; like suicide with a grenade in Gears of War, etc.

btw; 2, 8, 16, 24, 28 and 32 are _even_ numbers; giving out multiples of 5 will result in _odd_ scores...

Gears is unreadable and we want answers!

I'm not so sure it's the fault of any specific game or disk. Perhaps it's more obvious in some games than others because they use more of the disk's capacity, or because they do more random access reads, or because they start and stop the drive more often, etc.

The one that caused me the most trouble was FIFA 07, which would play perfectly until I had to make a substitution when a player was injured. The substitution screen would appear, but when it tried to load the background music from disk it gave the error.

The internal drive is one of the 360's worst points- it's loud, it scratches disks, and it may be the cause of these read problems.

I had this happen with a few disks when in the first few days that I had my 360. I had it in the 'vertical' orientation, and tried lying it flat. The problem went away, and I've kept it lying flat ever since (possibly just superstition caused by a coincidence).

I noticed that the 360 in the article is flat though; perhaps there's another reason why the disk isn't being picked up properly, or is unstable when spinning.

Another issue here is why can't the 360 just ask you to clean and re-insert the disk, and continue from the point where it left off? Wouldn't be much help in an online game, but I don't see why this has to cause a restart. Anyone care to ask MS this?

HD-DVD vs DVD: Let's compare Xbox 360 style

Dec 13th 2006 7:55PM (Joystiq Xbox)
Hi Tek, I think the comparison images would have been much more useful if they had focused on only part of the frame, i.e. use a macro lens or the 'macro' function on a digicam.

The screen was about 400 pixels high in your images; there won't be much visible difference between a 480p image and a 1080p image at that size (it's interesting that there was a difference at all).

Sit 20 feet away from your HDTV, and you won't notice the difference either.

HD-DVD vs DVD: Let's compare Xbox 360 style

I have Shaw HD Cable in Canada and the image quality is a joke compared to upscaled DVD, never mind HD-DVD. There are plenty of pixels, and some scenes look fairly detailed, but this is undermined by the horrific compression artifacts and the posterized dark colours (large areas of shadow flicker horribly as 'black', 'dark green', 'dark brown', and 'dark blue' fight for supremecy.)

HD DVD is quite stunning- the limiting factor restricting detail is how close I can sit to the screen.

Worse than not having a favicon is having the Netscape 'N' favicon, which screams "I installed the Netscape in 1998 and haven't updated my website since then".

They could release this video for women (Christopher Walken on SNL as 'The Continental') - not creepy at all...

Sweet Xbox 360 bundle from Future Shop

Dec 4th 2006 2:01PM (Joystiq Xbox)
I picked up that bundle, they'd run out of RR6 but I got it in the end thanks to their customer support. I'm not the biggest fan of Future Shop, their 'no questions asked' hardware return policy is great though: not sure which one to buy? Buy them all and return the ones you don't like next week...
