Linear? Don't care. Great visually yes. Way too much work? Yes. Who wants to grind the same few battles a million times? So monotonous after main story...

Why Final Fantasy XIII just didn't work

This game is too much work for too little payoff. After the main storyline you're stuck grinding the same battles for weeks trying to max your crystarium and make enough gil to get ultimate weapons. I wouldn't care about the linearity? of the game. the archelyte step is kind of cool as far as freedom of movement, but there are 0 non-battle interactions. You should be able to enter towns and shops Also FFXIII is kind of a lonely world with no npcs. I have little patience for ingot farming, and after a couple runs thru eden you get bored, so it is so hard to get gil in this game. Also I hate that you can't warp from either end of eden. that's a long walk to get back to a warp. All I have left to beat is Attacus, gigantuar, mission 64 n I just got to where I have 3 ultimate weapons and max crystarium. Not to mention, I noticed very little difference in battle time as I go up in crystarium. I was leveling in the same spot for days. I started with 16 battle time, and a week later I only got some 8 sec battles. the catalogs are pointless; somebody said they add only a .5% chance of getting item? I could go on.... It's too bad this game had a lot of potential. This game is too much like real life; work work work work, and every once in awhile you might a get a tiny reward.

Yeah, I wouldn't go that far. You're right about Bethesda games. I went from playing Oblivion to FFXIII, and I was thinking, it's too bad they couldn't take the graphics from FF and mix them with the gameplay of Bethesda games. FF for me is a nostalgia thing. I played the original on Nintendo, a few of the sequels, and then FF 7 was a great game. I've played that over and over. I read somebody's comment once that the story ended there with Final Fantasy , and I agree. After 7, they were more about amazing us with graphics than the quality of the gameplay. I do like the battle system in XIII, it's a great concept. Def like the old school feel of elder scrolls, reminds me of when people played games like DnD and read books like Forgotten Realms. Story over graphics anyday...
