Nov 14th 2011 1:50AM (Joystiq)They know the demand for the service will spike massively in the first few days, but that ongoing demand will be much lower. But building scale for a massive spike in users that will only last one or two days is really expensive, so they only scale for ongoing demand. Then, the game comes out and they ride out the spike in demand, having saved a boatload by not spending all that money to handle a 2 day spike.
I bet even now, the beachhead guys are sitting around waiting for everyone to forget about Elite, so demand goes down to predicted normal levels. Then, they'll flip the switch and say "hey guys look! Everything's fixed!"

Oct 27th 2011 7:36PM (Joystiq)Without those Big Three franchises, what, exactly, does Nintendo have? Shitty graphics, no HD support, crap online service, no other entertainment options (except Netflix), an overly bulky portable device whose features are handily eclipsed by any mid-range smartphone (which you can get for $149-$199).
The market Nintendo was serving--casual players--is now being quite well served by the iOS App Store. For them, Mario, Metroid and Zelda have been replaced by Angry Birds, Angry Birds and... well... Angry Birds.
