Tretton talks up need for 'cutting edge' tech, MS and Nintendo falling behind

Apr 9th 2011 11:09AM (Joystiq)
@kgoo867 I'm not entirely sure where you got YOUR numbers but as of January Black Ops had moved 12 million units, total, across all platforms and all markets. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2011/01/call-of-duty-black-ops-continues-sales-assault-2010-video-game-sales-down-vs-2009/1 I'm not sure where you got your information but someone lied to you.

also, as per http://www.vgrevolution.com/2011/01/pokemon-black-and-white-surpass-5-million-sales/ that was japan sales and we can see http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/26/pokemon-black-and-white-sell-2-million-in-u-s-in-first-two-week/ right here on joystiq. so after the first 2 weeks in the us pokemon had sold over 7 million units. I'd be interested to see what the numbers are at year end. I haven't seen europe release numbers, either. even if we cut us numbers in half, that 12m units sold by COD gap closes pretty hard.

I have to thank you for the laugh though, 100m units made my day.

Nintendo comments on 3DS region locking

Jan 18th 2011 12:06PM (Joystiq)
@Ospov Mostly "Grey Market" Imports. Games are different costs in different countries, and often someone from a country that charges more will import a game from a country that charges less. This isn't about them trying to stifle people importing titles (I import pokemon games to keep up on my Japanese) it's just them trying to protect their bottom line. It's such a shame that region locking is the first reason people turn to hacking a console, but they rarely stop there...

Report: 3DS will be region locked

@Epoque I imported Pokemon White, it DOES NOT function on my DSi. the DSi does in fact support region locks. It however, does function in my DSlite. The DSlite is region-free.

The DS is the only system I own that is not hacked. I think my 3DS may break this trend.

Square Enix decides to release Dissidia 012 in Japan March 3

@Elranzer It's an interesting thing. I used to foam at the mouth for a Final Fantasy/Square game and Enix got a giant "Meh" up untill the end of the Playstation 2. Now it's the complete opposite. DQ IX quickly found it's way into my top list of RPGs right in there with Chrono Trigger, FFs IV and VI. I do not know what is going on with Square these days but I sincerely hope they fix it soon.

Square Enix decides to release Dissidia 012 in Japan March 3

@Gibbeynator Even at the conversion rate when our economy was stronger (about 100 yen to the dollar) that would be $60.90 still pretty insane for a handheld portable game.

Nanovor was great, with the nanoscope and everything. The store was a bit (way) overpriced and getting the nanovor you wanted was way too random, but the gameplay was fantastic. Nanovor evolution is the total opposite. they killed a good battle system and crappy store for a good store, and a terrible battle system. I am also concerned with the fact that they killed the story they had going halfway through. I always loved the storylines in mechwarrior (and the battletech universe in general) so that does not give me a lot of hope.

Metroid: Other M ads focus on nostalgia, overacting

@ChongShin first, I hope you understand the definition of the word entitled. It means you have an enforceable right to. Which is just plain wrong. Second, You are entitled to something just because you say you are? Let's try that with my car, or my house, my wife even. You want it, and it's yours because you say so?

I would venture to say that you still have quite a bit of maturing and growing up to do.

Japanese Fallout: New Vegas ad pokes fun at JRPGs

Aug 4th 2010 3:14AM (Joystiq)
Actually DQ9 breaks a lot of those tropes itself. No overly elaborate cutscenes, it's all story and gameplay. So far while I am playing the story has not been "wipe out evil" it started out with "Help people" to "figure out what is going on" to "gather the Macguffins" Bosses and monsters have been mostly repercussions of the driving of the story, not the goal. It's also probably why I am enjoying it so much. Also, if I did not want to experience a story again, why would I ever watch a movie again? or re-read a book?

Don't get me wrong, before DQ9 I had given up on JRPGs, and I love Oblivion and Fallout 3. I just think DQ9 is so successful because it's bucking the current JRPG trend itself.

I have to go with Sectum Sempra. Avada Kedavra will kill sure, but sectum sempra makes them bleed, and think about what they've done.
