Japanese hardware sales: Lite's out
Mar 18th 2006 7:25AM (Joystiq Nintendo)PS3 worldwide in November [UPDATE 21]
Mar 15th 2006 7:57PM (Joystiq)As for the 4D -thing, games will be games and technically, isn't time a feature many games already use? Zelda, Blinx, the Sim games and so on.
The REAL reason for the delay? two words, BD-ROM and PRICE.
They want the PS3 to be cheap enough so they don't scare off the average consumer/gamer and the only way they can do that is if they wait. This also to make sure they have some playable games when they release it. The PS3 will be more expensive but still affordable (though the younger demographic will have some problem because of less or no income)
The Online service is another matter altogether. Though it was in the end inevitable since MS and Nintendo are already doing it. We have barely scratched the surface and there are many more things to consider. Games, HD questions, even other features like multimedia capabilities.
Lest not forget about the no-price drop on PS2. Could they be compensating for the PS3 or PSP? or do they expect the PS2 to remain as their major console even long after the PS3 has been released? Does that mean the PS3 will be more than just another competitor with xbox360?
Many questions unanswered
Japanese hardware sales: Lite's out
Mar 13th 2006 11:46PM (Joystiq Nintendo)I am guessing that many customers who didn't own a DS and were waiting for the DS Lite, didn't get one and then decided to buy the "old" version. Both are still sold out at many stores here in Japan, and when it comes to the DS Lite, many stores still don't take pre-orders.
What's strange is that no-one seems to know when next shipment will come in. I don't know what the hold up is, but Nintendo is holding back on something. They ought to be able to push the factories a bit harder because leaving people without makes people anxious. Which in turn is taken advantage off by the online/import stores who raise the prices even above PSP retail prices. That's truly mad!
It's a known fact that the DS Lite was sold out immediately after it was released and though they say that 450 000 units will ship during March they better get a move on (see Nintendo's Japanese homepage for the officials). The release dates for the rest of Asia and the world, having been pushed back to April is a proof of that.
What makes the sales different from other consoles is the variation we see in demographics. People from all generations play the DS, which also can be seen from the game-sales charts. The top DS games are the mixed brain training games, and they are there for a reason. There is no doubt in my mind that we are seeing a milestone in the portable console era, where the DS/DS Lite is the winner. The DS has pretty much already secured a place in the Hall of Fame.

Jan 23rd 2006 11:39PM (Joystiq)Consider also what the Revolution represents. It's not only an alternative, cheaper, different console. It's a virtual goldmine for us oldschool players whom when younger owned a NES or SNES. Keeping a high-end console like Xbox360 or PS3 gives the choice of playing the latest games with the best graphics, while having a Revolution satisfies the need whenever you get nostalgic or want to play something slightly different.
It's a good strategy that just might put a Nintendo console in the majority of homes, regardless of any pressence by Sony or Microsoft.
