Oblivion's vocal and line repetition

Sep 18th 2006 9:17AM (Joystiq)
Hey, 6 voice actors are way better then the 4 or so that inhabit Morrowind. But honestly, this has been an issue with every RPG I've played that offered some form of freedom. KOTOR was a bit worse in terms of this, offereing a mere 4/5 faces for the hundreds of characters in the entire game. The only ones that werent repetitive were the Champions Of Norrath Duology, and they were both heavily scripted. In short, will there ever be a RPG that offers good voice acting and freedom to roam the environment? And if anyone at Snowblind is reading this; Bring Back Champions, and port it to Xbox, dammit!

'No more online gaming for you!' says EA

Aug 7th 2006 9:18AM (Joystiq)
Ill Trooper has a point. Games that were released a few years back for online arent as fun anymore. Even the mighty Halo: CE isnt as exciting as when I first played it two-odd years ago. Being one of those "budget gamers", though, I do understand the general anger this move has caused. But, honestly, is anyone suprised? This is EA were dealing with, not Id or Valve. I think their (EAs) motto of "Challenge Everything" has shown that they think therye beyond the point of needing to please the consumer. And sadly, they are perfectly correct. Already, they have brokered that deal with the NFL for a what, decade-long, contract? Then they bought Renderware, giving them free reign over who got to use that technical gem. And who hasnt noticed that with each sucessive year, Madden's updates and new features have become less innovative? I'm not saying that a large company cant be both a sucessful and consumer-pleasing company. It just seems to me that the priorities need to shift to producing less games but with more quality in each. As for what franchise they will screw up next, I figure Stargate. The game was already in the works with Jowood, but that whole bankruptcy thing put that release in the crapper.

Drakedog's suicide: now on Google Video

Yeah, I kinda kno what he meant with wanting to get on with his life. I played Champions Of Norrath (it was made by snowblind) every weekend, the entire weekend, stopping occasionally to eat and sleep, for a good 5-6 months. All this to beat the main quest. Once I beat the main quest, I quit cold turkey. Unfourtunately, the next game in the series came out (Return To Arms) and I beat the thing in a month. Month After That I beat it on the next difficulty. And so on and so on, until I had completely leveled up my main character. Only to realized that the game was challenging anymore. What's the point of getting to the top, discovering your the best(or maybe one of the best) if theres no more fun or challenge left? No thrill at beating the dragon, knowing that going into a dungeon wouldnt mean death, but only more loot. It doesnt matter how much gold you have, but how much entertainment you get out of a game. Thats half the reason I never got into MMORPGs. I new I'd spend hours collecting stuff, and not enjoy a bit of it.

Censorship at E3

Jan 24th 2006 9:38AM (Joystiq)
"We have to start thinking of our selves as gaming enthusist not just people that play anything that is on a console or pc. Right now gamers don't have an identity like, cars, motorcycles, movies, art, even book enthusist and people of those communities and subcultures. Movies define us as horny weedheads, the shows and networks that are dedicated to us are nothing but rerun MTV rip-offs that insult the gamers that watch, and our magazines don't represent us. This is why we don't get respect, not because half naked men and/or women appear at our related events."

#29, I couldnt have said it better myself. This is the exact reason why the world (i.e. those people who dont game) treats us like little kids. Someone says 'hey, lets make E3 clean for the kids' and next thing u kno, people like Angry, who is probably somewhere around my age, is complaining about a lack of 'partial nudit' in a tradeshow he's unlikely to ever attend. Its like some american guy complaining about a Ausitrailian beach where nudity is allowed. What's the point? You dont ever see it except in photos, and I imagine there are enough of them left over from previous E3s that should keep u satisfied. And thnx Mudcrab, you are the reason why I cant get my female friends to play videogames. They all take one look at Tira from Soul Calibur 3 and think 'eew, a whore' and then wont even bother to pick up the controller. Supposedly the industry was "concerned" about attracting a female audience, and if by female audience they meant lesbian, they did a terrific job. And on a final note, I'm ok, atleast to some extent, with 'models' like the COD2 MP from last year, so long as they actually know some useful info about the product there trying to get you to buy. But if therye just clueless girls in thongs and tight teeshirts, then by all means: can 'em.
