Poll: Would you buy 2D games for next-gen systems?

Dec 14th 2006 7:16PM (Joystiq)
I think geometry wars has done well enough to prove that 2d can be successful on a next gen system. It's just a matter of having a good enough game at the right price point.

How much is an hour of gaming worth?

The main crux of the matter from my point of view is that if the game is too short, then it makes more sense to rent rather than buy it.

MTV's unaired Mass Effect preview

Looks more real time than I would have expected. More Jade Empire than KOTOR (which was neverwinter/infinity engine realtime-with-pause which is ultimately just dressed up turnbased). I think the autotarget is a good thing. It's a matter of preference of course, but in an rpg, I prefer that whether you hit or not should depend on stats rather than player's ability to aim.

Oh, yeah. I think it looks freaking awesome. It's really the only thing that has me interested in a 360 and I just can't justify that for a single title.

Boy on boy kissing in Bully

"Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination."

To twist that into some anti-homosexual edict is the real abomination. Men and women are different. Of course you're not going to "lie with" them the same. Doesn't mean you can't "lie with" em at all. If someone says you shouldn't feed your dogs *as* you do your cats, does that mean if you feed one, you don't feed the other? No. It means you should be able to tell the difference between cat food and dog food.

Vista license to only allow one computer transfer

Oct 13th 2006 5:51PM (Engadget)
Swapping components is not an easy thing to track fairly. Each individual swap (hard drive, mobo, ram, vid card etc.) might be something that you would reasonably expect them to allow under the terms of the license, but bundle together enough of them and you can swap your whole machine out multiple times. How many machine transfers does it count as if you've swapped mobo & hard drive? How about if you just swap one of those but do it ten times?

As for this:
"What's the big deal. For all that it does it doesn't cost that much."

Maybe not, but for most people it's not just a matter of how much it costs versus what it does; what's more important is how much it costs versus what it does *that the OS they've already paid for and own doesn't do*

Sony VAIO L gets Core 2 Duo and Blu-ray burner

wait...isn't the Go the laptop line of vid cards?
Did they use that to just save on size? that's silly.

Sony's Vaio C series of 13.3-inchers

If the one with the "real" vid card comes in at under 4lbs, and price isn't ludicrous then one of those is my next computer.

Computer program can beat people at crosswords

Sep 1st 2006 6:07PM (Engadget)
"Uh, that's not linguistically-aware. It's just brute-forcing the puzzle with some dictionary lookups to boost the speed. Still snazzy, but they're overselling what it's doing."

Exactly. Give it cryptic crossword ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptic_crossword#Pure_cryptic ) that doesn't reuse any old words/clues to munch on and the computer should be sunk.
