The Pirate Bay retrial request denied

Jun 27th 2009 10:52AM (Joystiq)
You are a very good citizen that would be very happy in a dictatorial society.

Presumably you are against piracy because it is against the law. But can you imagine that the law can be inadequate in some cases?

The Pirate Bay retrial request denied

After reading the comments, I think there are some issues people have failed to see.

Yes, tpb is violating the common sense notion that you cannot distribute something that is copyright protected. So if I make a song and I claim its rights, then you cannot take my song and distribute it without me getting any benefits. Either you give me benefits or you do not distribute my song.

However, tpb challenges: 1) the very idea of copyright protection; and 2) the way benefits are made from copyrighted materials.

Some people have suggested we should get rid of copyrights altogether, and many people think that a radical new business model for making benefits of copyrighted materials is necessary.

This trial is not about whether the tpb is guilty or not. This is about the future of digital media distribution.

Miyamoto flattered, not worried by Sony, Microsoft motion controllers

Im severely less optimistic than you. Yes they might be able to fake some things, but the question is whether the 'milo' will be interesting to interact with. Personally I find interacting with most so called human cognition models (think eliza) incredibly boring. There has not been anything that even midly resembles human interaction...I guess all I am saying is, dont get your hopes up...

Cracking voice recognition is a joke. In this case they not only need to parse the speech signal to identify which words are being spoken, these words must also be 'understood' in the correct way. In other words, they need to model human cognition on the xbox360. Given that this is literally the point of all of the entirely field of cognitive psychology since its birth in the 19th century and that they have not yet succeeded, it doubt microsoft will in the next year...

I would take the opposite view in that with the huge power advantage of the ps3 and xbox360 over the wii, these former companies might actually be able to do something more interesting that heating up a fried egg with a motion controller
