Never meant there to be any insinuations of payments from companies to Joystiq for reviews. They are very independent and it is something I liked about this site.
That being said, yes, Justin had a big smile and abashedly loved the games despite a few minor flaws. Perhaps it is because I am from a different generation than he that I place too much emphasis on the rating system because I am used to it meaning something. You can give a game 5/5 for fun but then give it a 4/5 for controls Methinks too much time has been wasted on this and I'm starting to think that perhaps it was better when Joystiq did not have a rating system at all. At least that way, people were forced to read the review and then you could read the enthusiasm Justin has for the game and go with that.
Apologies for coming back to post this one but I wanted to clear up the fact that I was NOT insinuating that Joystiq of being in anyone pockets.
You want me to leave? Fair enough. Before i go, I want to say something.
I only asked what I did because I love joystiq. Up-to-date news, good insights into the industry, an open, vibrant and colorful community are just some of the things I like about the site (clean look/feel, quick to load, good mobile apps are some others).
I would love to have a one stop shop for my game news/review perusing which is why I did my mini-rant on the review section. You editors/authors give real life to your reviews but I just find them inconsistent. Sure it's new way of doing it and maybe it doesn't sit well with me, but your response to ask me to leave I think is a bit harsh. Blaming everything that is wrong with the comment section on me is a bit strong but hey, I guess you took offense to what I said and asked.
Someday, you may realize the importance of free speech, even if you don't always agree with the content of it. I wonder how you would feel if you were asked to leave a place you enjoyed and were then mocked because you disagreed with some "esteemed" person. To me that is a form of bullying. You gave no defense at all and instead lashed out at me. I don't hold it against you as we all have our not so proud moments Justine. For what it's worth, I really enjoy your writing style.. You have a flair that I can never hope to match and kudos for you for that. I was just asking for some consistency in the rating system, if I came across too strong, I apologize.
So with that, I bid Joystiq a farewell. It's been interesting.
PS. Regardless of all this, I'm still going to try the Gunstringer.
I know you said not to trust you for this review but I'm starting to wonder if I can trust you for any review...
"The Gunstringer has some problems. Its sitting controls aren't perfect. It needs some tonal variation. The movement controls take some getting used to."
so game is not perfect and does not work at is says it should (sitting controls fubared) but you give it a perfect score anyways? What the f*ck ever happened to serious and honest reviews? Between the other game sites that get paid to say good things and now this site giving wacky scores, where should I go for real reviews?
I know that mobile/kinect/wii/move titles are different than say the Gears of War, God of War, Zelda games out there but come on.... A 4.5 our of 5 would have been better but to me, a 5/5 is the epitome of gaming. This is an absolute "must play" game of the year. The controls, music, design and flow of the game are untouchable. Story was top notch... that is a 5/5 for me.
You really should move so you don't have to use a 14.4bps modem anymore - that's the only reason I can think of that would back up your claim that the PSN is down one evening a month. Well that and maybe you are so dumb that you forget to turn on your PS3 but I assume that since you can type, you aren't that stupid... so it must be the 14.4bps modem or perhaps your remote location... the problem is obviously on your end because my downtime on the PSN (hack attack aside) is a frequent as XBL.. which is like you claim "rarely" but it does happen.
WTF? Are you saying that ANY resale market is wrong? If you are so hung up on the car thing, let's try another product. Baby clothes... Osh Kosh made some clothing but I bought it on Craigslist... boohoo, Osh Kosh, didn't make any money. Guess what? I bought some skates last year and then sold them when I outgrew them. Boohoo, Bauer didn't get a second cut (no pun intended) from the sale. Want me to go on? I guess you do since you think cars are SO different than any other product out there.
I bought a slap chop and used it once. Sold it. Vince didn't get any money but do you hear him whining? I bought a Metallica CD and then sold it when my music tastes changed and guess what? Lars didn't cry about it. I bought an Ansel Adams original painting and when I decided the 90's were over I sold it. Ansel did not cry the blues (and guess what, people were treated to the same identical experience!).
I dare you to find fault in any of these examples, they are all different industries so your "cars are different" is the weakest argument I've heard since Bill Clinton said "I did not inhale" and "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" (though his was responses were quite funny).
By your argument, you think that eBay, Kajiji or Craigslist should give the original makers of each product a cut of what they own.
If you think the games industry deserves a cut from every resale of a game, then it should be attributed to all other industries. Sorry for the rant here but good god, think before you click submit. stop thinking "cars" and think of the bigger picture.
Okay, so if you average that out, it's just over 200 million a year that they are not paying to tax dollars. I got a better idea. Move those companies entirely to another country. I think the writer of this story needs to take an economic class or two. Do you have any clue on what economic impact that EA has had in the US? How many people they employ, rent they pay, people who drive to work and pay for gas, buy food and help your economy moving. If you are so bitter at EA for not declaring 200 million per year, I don't think you mind would be even able to grasp how much the gas, oil and tobacco companies get away with.
This site should stick with what it knows... games. Not economics.
That being said, those loopholes are in place because people don't really care otherwise, they would vote or get involved. I understand you need eyeballs on your site for ad impressions and it is Sunday but at least put some effort into it.
Yeah, I've got a Phat 60GB PS3 and it's one of the games I had to track down online (Amazon I think) but it plays and they really need to do an updated version of that game. It rocks 82 different ways...
It's not about having to authenticate.. it's forcing people to install yet another digital distribution software when there is a perfectly good one. Why does EA think that Steam is so terrible now after having their games on it for years? EA should stick to making games because they are probably one of the least innovative game companies out there.
I'm not saying that no one should ever challenge Steam, I'm saying that if you are going to do so, at least put some effort into the software. I would be very surprised if EA wasn't collecting personal info about your PC and relaying it back to HQ without your knowledge or even dropping in some kind of advertising.. which brings up another good point.
Valve has constantly given me reassurance about their platform and games. EA on the other hand has not. They are known for being greedy, short sighted and unimaginative. They have a long way to go before I will ever let them install non-game related software on my PC.
The review seemed like it was so sarcastic right up until the end.. I read through it thinking, oh he's going to lambast it but then he praises it for doing some things right... He'll give it a score of 3.5/5. Nope.. 4.5/5... near perfect for a Kinect game I guess... Why rate PSN/Kinect games but not retail games (sorry if I they explained why but I never saw the reasoning behind it).
Regardless, I enjoyed the game on the mobile platform, don't think I would spend $10 for it though. I think the gunslinger route is the way to go with it.
