Wired News: 2006 vaporware awards

Dec 28th 2006 2:05AM (Joystiq)
A fairly disappointing list. I mentions a few items that really haven't been in development all that long... yet it misses Starcraft: Ghost? Unless I missed the update that it was officially canceled, Ghost should've been on that list somewhere in place of something that's been in development for a shorter time.

World of Warcraft gets less downtime

Dec 22nd 2006 10:26PM (Joystiq)
@1: Umm... "industry standard"? Every MMO I've played had downtimes once a week just like WoW (exept WoW wasn't as laggy nearly as often). The only reason it was such an uproar with WoW is because it started to attract the non-hardcore gamer. The average hardcore gamer will look at downtimes and be able to see that they're necissary... the casual gamer is the one who raises a big fuss over it.

Over-all, downtimes never bothered me. In WoW or in other MMOs. Still, it's nice that they'll be able to do the weekly maint without taking down the servers. I just hope that the servers won't be lagged to the point where they might as well be down for those 8 hours when they're working on them.

What's in the name "video game"

Dec 20th 2006 3:52PM (Joystiq)
The difference between "Cinema" and "Graphic Novel" is that they don't sound clunky at all. Quite frankly I'll always call them movies and comic books (or manga), but the thought of calling them by their PC terms doesn't make me wanna wretch.

"Interactive Software" is kinda like when people say that people aren't "Handicapped", they're "Differently Abled". Or the same way that it's actually contraversial to wish someone a "Merry Christmas" this time of year. It's one of those PC terms that just went way over-board and started treading in areas that didn't need to be PC'd.

Chess is a game, yet it has a renouned respect over the entire globe. Magic the Gathering makes no effort to cover-up it's status as a game, marketing itself as a "Collectable Card Game", and there's tournements every year with fairly large cash rewards. I doubt anyone's made a living off of MTG, but 50,000 or higher (not sure what they're at these days) is definately nothing to sneeze at.

The problem video games has isn't in the name. The problem lies in polititians and other people who get too much camera time bashing on them and claiming they can lead to violence. The general public does little to no research on things, so when they see someone on TV trashing on games, they assume 2 things:

1. He's on TV, so he's someone important.

2. He's on TV, so he must know what he's talking about.

Once we get more people on TV saying that gaming can be a very healthy hobby, then games will stop getting put in such a negative light.

Thieves break through Gamestop wall with sledgehammer [update 1]

I have to agree with CJC. The fact that they actually thought to grab the security tapes not only shows that they knew they had (working) cameras... but they happened to know exactly where the tapes were held. Wreaks of inside job.

First MMORPG to hit the DS

#16: "I enjoy the game because I do quests, and I play with my friends from school. And they too apprear to enjoy the game because we get to chat around, help each other level up and complete quests and whatnot."

That could be used to describe just about any MMO, and is hardly a feature exclusive to Maple Story. Heck, part of why I got into WoW was because both my brother, and a few people from work were into it. Find a different MMO to play with your friends, I can assure you that you'll all have more fun with it.

Also, now that I look at it, the "Read" link confirms that MS is indeed coming to the DS. Has some pretty bad Enlish in there, so details are hard to get, but the main message is plain as day.

Just a shame that the DSF entry has to be so vague about it. It's like... Yeah, I've heard of Maple Story, but where were you going with that?

Maple Story adds nothing to the DS library (if it is, in fact, coming to DS, the article doesn't really say). I played the game for under a month before realizing that every class has but one build, and even then, all the classes are pretty much played the same. Just doesn't mean anything to be a Wizard when every Archer and Thief is doing the exact same thing you are. Oh, and forget about team play. This MMO is all about solo grinding (granted you can party with other people, but it serves little purpose, even late in the game).

Add-in that simply getting from Level 29 to Level 30 (out of 200 Levels, mind you) is more tedious than getting the max level in most other MMOs. After a while, it just gets boring. I've heard of people who'd play this game for about a year and barely make 60, I don't wanna know what it takes to get to 200.

This game might be a free MMO, but you really get what you paid for, too. There are much better free to play MMOs out there.

Rumor: Wii to sell for $249? [update 2]

"Virtual Consoler (we knew this)"

So like... when your grandma dies, the Wii gets-up and pats you on the back as you weep?

I don't like how it kinda shades along the corners. Kinda gives it a generic look.

Portrait of Ruin painted

I think it's ironic. You guys whine and bitch about the "new" anime style, then turn around and start praising Rondo of Blood as the best game in the series that they need to port over here.

Funny how you can pre-judge an anime-based game you've never played so highly, then look at this new one and pre-judge it so harshly.

Seriously... stop looking for a reason to bitch and just be glad that they're making a new Castlevania game period.
