Feb 7th 2012 4:42PM (Joystiq)Why would you post so many comments for this story? Do you work for Sony, or do you play fanboy for free? Seriously, why all the undeserved passion and bratty snark to defend a huge conglomerate's F-U to America business decision? The reason people are upset is because, once again, a Japanese games company is giving preferential treatment to Japan only despite the two other, much bigger territories (NA and EU) that contribute more to the company's bottom line. That is the argument here, and you seem to have completely missed it.

Oct 5th 2011 1:20PM (Joystiq)Removing the PS2 BC was not done for cost-cutting reasons. I can't believe people still insist that was the reason. They are missing the bigger picture. It was done for profit boosting reasons outside of making the hardware cheaper.
Yes, it does make the PS3 slim cheaper, but not by much. If they were only worried about price, they could have had a higher priced PS2 compatible version of the PS3 for sale alongside a cheaper model that only played PS3 games. No, look around you people, the PS2 market was too big to allow the PS3 to compete in the years around 2006-2008. Today, GameStop and other stores have far less and less PS2 games. It won't be long before they're gone from those stores.
We've reached the point where some PS2 games are not readily available at retail like they used to be. So, Sony has craftily made some of you long for your old PS2 games the past few years by removing the feature from PS3s, and now is a great time for them to unleash the double dips and make you buy your old games all over again. Sony waited a few years to build up demand for forgotten PS2 titles and watched PS2 discs in retail dwindle as the PS3 library and adoption rates grew. It appears that they also waited to avoid the backlash of giving a big F-U to people who remember how great the 60GB PS3 was before they started hacking features all over the console. Sony used their time wisely and now, a few years later, it's time for you to buy your PS2 games all over again. As a 60GB Ultimate PS3 owner, I tried to warn people about this when Sony announced PS2 BC would never be coming back. I looked back at my old Joystiq comments and found I had posted a comment warning people about the return of PS2 games in digital form in August 2009.
I genuinely feel sorry for people suckered into buying games they already purchased previously. Those who never had a PS2 will enjoy the games now, but those same people should realize how they have been played the past few years by not being able to just stick a PS2 disc in their PS3 and have it work. I have a very large PS2 library that I can still enjoy for free with the 60GB PS3. The $600 has been worth every penny for all of the extra features. However I am dreading the day my 60GB dies, and I have to try and find (and pay a pretty penny for) another one of these amazing machines. Gone too soon but never forgotten.
