The Daily Grind: Taking part in the doubled experience for City of Heroes?

Mar 7th 2010 3:23PM (Massively)
All the complaint you guys are making about the game are the exact same things you could say about any MMO. All the combat is static I the Warhammer table top game but when the MMO came out it only felt like a slightly fancier version of WOW. Why would i want to do that again? Each has it's own novelty to it and when that wears off they're all the same static environment.

The key to ANY MMO is community, if you fall in with a good group of players your gonna enjoy the game more. I've been in a small but stable super group for 2.5 years and we have a blast. With the completely customizable difficulty we crank it up as high as think we can get away with and just blast through everything (or get our butts kicked)

The Daily Grind: What IP do you want to see as an MMO?

B5 would be outstanding as a competitor to eve.You could have each race would be a different faction, there are nearly 2 dozen races in the game, you put the players in charge of each just like corporations are run in eve. You could have some truly EPIC ship combat!

Also Shadowrun if done properly would be great.

It's just too bad MMO companies are only making wow clones:(

No other games get that kind of coverage because no other games have eve's depth. And with every other MMO trying to clone WOW I doubt we'll ever see anything like it again.

NCsoft responds to City of Heroes speculation

I'm sorry i just don't see CO being a factor in the long term. They've made the same mistake as every game in the last 3 years. They've made the game so solo friendly there's no reason to team, there's no reason to play a support character, everybody's just gonna solo through the game until they hit max level. For most this is gonna happen in the next couple months. When they've done that there isn't enough content to justify playing through the game again, and since you probably already pick the best power combo's there's little reason to start an alt. Put all these issues together and the bottom line is there's nothing to build a community around No reason to talk to anyone and CO's own zone mechanics make this even harder. Cryptic has promised to address these issues and I'm sure they will eventually but the player base is just gonna move on to the next big MMO in a couple of months, probably star trek online.

We've seen this process in repeat in almost every game in the post-WOW period AOC, WAR, vanguard, Pirates of the burning sea... Game has huge over hyped launch, everyone buys it plays through the content, everyone moves on to the next over hyped launch. Only LOTRO has managed to avoid this and maintain a good player base, mostly through their massive amount of both free and paid content they're constantly adding.

COH as well as EQ, EVE, even UO and DAOC have manage to keep going by building small but loyal communities. the common demoninator in these games is that you have to join up with other players to achieve the highest levels of success. Once you make friends you in the game you tend to stick around.

The big demarcation is WOW which can be solo'd right to max level... but then requires you to team in the end game. Every game since has copied the first half of that by allowing you to solo through the game but with no end game content to keep you there, and no community to to encourage you to stay until there is end game content. So we just end up with a solo RPG that we happen to be paying a monthly fee for... Does a game you solo through still actually count as an MMO? Why do we still pay a monthly fee when you play through the game without a network connection?

The only current games I see actively trying to break this paradigm are fallen earth and *maybe* jumpgate. And I think KOTOR is probably going to go off and do something completely different and original.

CO Ignited to the stratosphere from launch day just like AOC and WAR, next quarter the numbers will fall back to earth and we'll all be hyping the next great MMO. These current MMO's are just too disposable.

'Big Dawg' vs. Madden lawsuit dismissed

Oct 18th 2009 11:18PM (Joystiq)
This is hilarious! You people have lost massive amount of respect

If anyone tried to use an EA character in a video game or a work of fiction, or in any other way you can think of and then (this is the important part) made money from the endeavor EA's lawyers would at the minimum hit you with a cease and desist and at worst sue you into oblivion. EA does this all the time, it's the reason they keep the lawyers around.

Now the shoe's on the other foot and everyone on their knees kissing EA's backside and defending them?

If you watched browns football or watched NFL highlights every week at any time in the last 20 years you've seen John "Big Dawg" Thompson in the stands. This is THE reason EA put him in the game, so the game would be more realistic. If he wasn't celebrity, EA wouldn't have bothered would they?

Mask-wearing fan suing EA over likeness in Madden 09

Oct 4th 2009 11:27PM (Joystiq)
Well you may not know who he is but if you've watched weekly highlight reels in the last 20 years you've probably seen him at one point or another. I've never met him but he is the probably the most recognizable symbol of the hardcore Brown's fan. And that's why EA used his likeness.

And I know he's made public appearances in the Cleveland area especially back in the 90's when Modell took his team to Baltimore.

Let's just let the courts sort it out.

Source: MechWarrior movie 'in development' at Eisner's Tornante

Yes Battletech has a vast and rich source material behind the IP, but this is hollywood It's almost a given they're chuck it all in Garbage and make about some alien invasion set in the year 2012.

I'm more hopeful about the new ultramarine movie just announced. It doesn't look like it's gonna be a major studio release, You can say a lot about GW but they will make sure they stay true to the fluff. And the all CGI aspect means they'll be able to do the truly epic battles you expect from the warhammer universe. A movie about the Tyranid invasion of Macragge would easily best all the Alien movies put together

Bill Roper explains teams and SuperGroups in new Champions trailer

Aug 31st 2009 11:06PM (Massively)
I haven't played in the beta but i've heard the game is so solo friendly there's no point or incentive to grouping anyway. Anyone who's actually played the game have an opinion on this?

A game where everybody solo's is called a single player game. And it's a waste of money to spend $15/month to play a game that could just as easily be played without an internet connection. This is also why i don't play WoW.
