How would you change Apple's Core i7 MacBook Pro?

May 29th 2010 12:48PM (Engadget)
Ship it without Mac OS X for $400-$500 less. That way, people who love the hardware and design but despise Mac OS X (like me) could slap Linux or Windows on it and use it like a regular system.

I don't know about you guys, but I'd love to have a laptop with a transparent bottom.

Corsair Nova, Reactor SSDs now available

Feb 28th 2010 12:10PM (Engadget)
Honestly, what respectable SSD manufacturer still uses a JMicron controller? Time and time again, they've been proven to be naught but garbage.
Get the Nova and shut down the Reactor.

Acer developing 'ace in the hole' ultrathin, putting MacBook Air on notice

@bakkermaarten007 My Aspire 6920G has a large touch-sensitive media control to the left of the keyboard; Apple and Sony don't have that. My laptop has a Blu-ray drive; Apple doesn't do that. It only cost me $1099 two years ago; Sony doesn't do that.

(expects serious downvote)

@Fanfoot Whoops, wrong choice of words. I meant make it work on other OEM systems - Acer, HP, Dell, etc.

Acer's got Aspire 5740 and 7740 models coming out at the end of the month, with some packing ATi Radeon HD 5470 or 5650 GPUs.

One small problem, Ryan: the G1s won't be getting TRIM anyway.

Acer wants the Aspire 8940 to be your Core i7-packing portable of choice

You can get most 7 drivers directly from the component manufacturers (like Nvidia) if they aren't already included in the installation DVD.
And the few bits that don't have 7 drivers will have Vista ones, which work more or less perfectly with 7 (the Realtek audio drivers customized for the 6920G's Tuba bass booster, for example).

See if you can get the Family Pack with some friends and split it - 3 Home Premium licenses for $150 ain't bad.

Yeah, Acer's speaker systems got a huge boost in quality with the xx20 and xx30 series notebooks. I used to use a set of external speakers with my older TravelMate...not anymore with the 6920G.
Oh, and why are you still on Vista? Go get 7 already, hombre!
