PS3, Xbox 360 account for 80% of Blu-ray, HD-DVD players

Jan 8th 2007 4:03PM (Joystiq)
#19 I know the PS3 is hdcp compliant, but no company has enabled hdcp encryption to their movies yet. When all movies become hdcp enabled, if they are not played on an hdcp compliant machine the output resolution will be 480p. Soon hdcp will be enabled and the xbox 360 hd-dvd drive will become a worthless hd player that displays 480p movies. Unless you buy the xbox 360v2 with the hdmi out.

What about the people who bought the 360 hd-dvd add on without knowing that the player will become worthless when hdcp is enabled because the 360 does not have an hdcp compliant output?

"oh and one more thing so people know,
VGA is HDCP compliant!"

Please stop spreading ignorance and just STFU noob. VGA is an analog connection and is not HDCP compliant. Also anyone who thinks a hdmi dongle is so easy to do because there is unused pins on the multi out of the 360 also need to stop spreading ignorance. Please do some research. All the work arounds for hdcp is by purchasing a box that contains a hdcp chip for decoding and priced at 300+ with no guarantee that it will work in all hdcp cases. Obviously this new revision is mainly for the people who want to watch hd-dvd movies on their hd-dvd add-on(hdmi) and people who want to download movies (120GB hd).

"when they do add HDMI support to the 360, you can be sure it will be in a way that current console owners can take advantage of."

Do you not see the picture in this blog?

It clearly shows an hdmi port which your 360 does not have, so obviously it is not going to be supported by the old 360. Also I have already stated that an hdmi cable without hdcp is worthless, unless you just want to use it for strictly gaming purposes.

"you don't need HDCP for gaming"

If you read my post prior to the one you quoted I specifically state that I agree it does not affect the 360 for gaming purposes. Unless you
Don’t have a TV with a vga input. Anyways my point was just to clarify that hdmi is important if you went ahead and purchased the hd-dvd drive. If you are going to use the 360 as an hd-dvd player you will run into problems with hdcp because an hdcp chip is required. Also to throw some more knowledge out there, you guys all know that without a
hdcp compliant player the resolution will be scaled down to 480p.

"Agian, the HDCP can be authethic in software much like the HD-DVD authethication is done. the xbox360 can emulate the HDCP signal when it leaves the box and your tv will read that and display normaly."

If that is true why is the only way to bypass the hdcp encryption through a hardware "blackbox" which cost $400+ dollars and require a hdcp chip set? Also if it was so simple to bypass hdcp why are there so many people in the avforums speaking about the problems with current hdmi capable av receivers that will not be able to properly display hdcp content?

I agree that on the gaming end the 360 does not benefit from the hdmi connection, but due to the fact that movie industries are going to use hdcp, hdmi is a huge factor if you are going to use the hd-dvd add-on. Further more everyone talking about a proprietary hdmi cable, the cable will not do anything unless the system it self has a hdcp chip allowing for full hd-dvd resolutions. So no microsoft will never release a hdmi cable and even if they did it would be pointless without having the ability to be hdcp compliant.

I have a question for everyone saying the HDMI is not important. As of right now the 360 is not hdcp capable so even including a hdmi cable would be pointless correct? So when the movie industry decides to use hdcp on all their movies the 360 w/ hd-dvd add-on will not be able to display hd-dvds in the correct hd resolution. So if anyone has a 360v1 and wants to watch hd-dvds you are sol in the near future?
