Wii Warm Up: Superfluous waggle

Apr 7th 2007 10:55AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Here's me totally ignoring the potential of the Wiimote: What's the difference between wagging abstractly and pressing buttons in a memorized pattern? Neither make a particular amount of sense and are really only useful when they become memorized patterns of movement.

Now, NOT ignoring the potential of the Wiimote: I think game designers who are porting games and tacking controls on are lazy and doing it because they have to with the Wii. I don't think we'll see a decent third-party game that makes great use of the Wiimote on the Wii for another year or two, and it's highly doubtful it will be a port.

Cosmo isn't down with the Wii

Feb 27th 2007 8:38PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Speaking as a woman who doesn't know anyone worth talking to who reads Cosmo, I would say that Cosmo has as much a clue about what a real, down-to-earth woman wants as a houseplant.

I would use the word "insipid" when describing Cosmo, but that seems a little harsh. Like making fun of a little mentally challenged child. The kid can't help it. Neither can Cosmo...oh, wait, perhaps it can.

WRUP: everybody votes that the Everybody Votes channel sucks edition

Feb 16th 2007 2:32PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I like the SORPRISE voting channel. Sure, it's not as robust as it could be, but it's another fun distraction.

WRUP: still stuck in Zelda edition

Feb 9th 2007 2:19PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'm sure some fanboys will be outside my house with torches and pitchforks before long, but I actually bought Zelda on sale before I got my Wii. I got a Wii about 3 weeks ago and have yet to crack open the shrinkwrap on the game.

I'm in no rush to play Zelda because I want to take my time with it. I know, it's crazy.

And it will be the first Zelda game I've ever played.

Wii Warm Up: how 'bout them tunes?

Feb 9th 2007 12:22PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
The Wii shopping music is so department store elevator-musak cheesy that it's FANTASTIC. I find myself humming along and bobbing my head while browsing the VC offerings.

Is there anything NOT cute about the Wii?

Wii Warm Up: Wii60

Jan 28th 2007 11:06AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I own a Wii and a PS2. I will NOT be buying a PS3, even though I enjoy some of the PS2 games. I am, however, thinking about getting a 360 when/if their prices drop a bit.

I was merely toying with the idea, but then when the news about Guitar Hero being ported to the 360 broke, I came down on the "probable" side of that purchase.

Wii Warm Up: So how is the name?

Jan 26th 2007 10:54AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
The word "Wii" is not only inclusive because of "we," but it lends itself to fun use of the word, which mirrors the fun of the Wii itself. I doubt there would be a "revolutionkitty.com", but there sure is a wiikitty.com.

I think the word echos the idea behind a revolution, if you imagine "we" as a larger movement of people who have taken to the Wii like no other console.

A lot, A LOT, of thought, research and time goes into product branding. The Wii is a brand that helps build itself, mostly because it's a great product and people get to talking about it. But it's fun to talk about without feeling like a complete product shill.

The funny name? In retrospect, Nintendo seems like a genius.

Wii Warm Up: At last, your love has come along?

I've been planning my Wii hunting strategy all week. I originally was going to go to a new Target by me, figuring not a lot of people know there's a new Target and it's sort of hidden in a warehouse district near downtown Houston.

But being the diligent (okay, obsessive) Wii-researcher, I started reading on a couple boards that if the Wii console wasn't advertised in the local Target weekly, they wouldn't have any. Great source of info was the amazon.com Wii comments and crazy.org's Target inventory scanner. Seems like Texas didn't get any Wii shipments...nor did much of the southern U.S.

Got up this morning to check iTrackr, crazy.org and last minute amazon comments and gave up the ghost on trying Target. Figured if they didn't have any and I found this out at 8am when they opened, I'd be too late getting to CC or BB to try those stores. So I went to CC at 6:30am and was second in line for 9 available consoles. Many people were turned away, maybe like 20-30.

Now my brand-new Wii is all hooked up and purring. Ah, sweet success!

Wii: sucking in the seniors, bit by bit

Jan 8th 2007 5:05PM (Joystiq)
Seriously, I believe 90% of the people who posted negative responses here simply don't GET IT. Why hate on a system that allows all sorts of people to get into gaming? What, you're no longer cool if 96-year-old Edna down the street kicks your butt in Wii Sports? Get over yourselves, "gamers." No wonder all the 15 year olds get off on GTA and games of their ilk...no imagination or fun, just mindlessness for the sake of mindlessness.
