Reggie thinks third-parties don't 'get' the Wii: discuss

Nov 19th 2008 4:08PM (Engadget)
The real problem is that the Wii was designed as a fad, not a game system. It is underpowered and lacks a decent feature set(no HD, no real online capabilities, etc). The only thing that is somewhat novel about it is the controller which loses it's appeal after about a week. The sad thing is that Nintendo did such a good job of telling people that they were looking at a marvel of modern technology that everyone started believing it. Great job on their PR departments side. The artificially created supply problem is a great idea. Not only are you telling people that it is a great device, but you create the ultimate keeping up with the Jones' attitude towards your product regardless of it's quality.
Game developers don't get it because there is nothing to get. The games that are being developed can't run on this hardware. And graphics are not the reason. there is not enough processing power for AI either. Nintendo's games are kinda novel but lack any sort of challenge other than motor skills. The same repetitive game over and over again. I personally didn't find their games enjoyable as a kid and they are still extremely lame to me. It is really only a matter of time until everyone wakes up and realizes they bought a pet rock.

Ohio report recommends scrapping electronic voting

Dec 17th 2007 4:09PM (Engadget)
As far as I know there has not been a single incident world wide of anyone hacking an elctronic voting system without getting caught and the vote corrected. Furtheremore there is a papertrail in every other country other than the US from electronic voting machines. It is called a receipt. A tried and tested system used by every retailer in the country. This is an absolutely false asessment by your government. Anyone who believes that a punch card machine is more reliable has to be insane. There is no way for athe voter to check if the vote recorded on the punch card is correct. Also, if there is even the slightest mechanical malfunction the vote is not counted. That means that poor counties, that get the hand me down machines from richer counties, have their votes not counted. If you were wondering how W won again, that is how it works. The antiquated voting methods are being used to falsify your election results. This has to stop.

I downloaded the demo for this game last night and was really disappointed. The 'Hero sequences in the demo are super short and it makes no difference if you actually do it or not. That in and of itself is fairly lame, the gameplay itself is very limiting. Where is the jump button for this game? It plays like a downgraded Ninja Gaiden. It forces you to play the way the developer intended for you to play, perfectly flat and the only jumps and aerial moves are canned animations that repeat over and over again. The constant interruption of the action with these lame throw moves(the gameplay actually stops and they force you to watch a little movie?) is totally lame. I am really ticked at this game lineup for this console. Nothing really worht mentioning, except for maybe UT3, Assassin's Creed and Haze. The rest is the same canned junk Sony has been producing for years.

WTF?

I am really looking forward to this one, the first one did a great job at creating a creepy environment. The sound design on the first one was excellent.

Peter Moore tells Joystiq about the new warranty program

Jul 5th 2007 6:42PM (Joystiq)
I don't know a single person that has had a failure. 120 people on my friends list and not one has had an issue. These are people from all over the place and almost all of them had their console on release date. I am not sure what the failure rate is but I am fairly convinced that it is nowhere close to 33%.

I think the failure rate is likely unacceptably high, but how much of that is user created failure I do not know. Having worked for a major computer manufacturer i know that the reported failure rate and actual failure rate is vastly different. I am pretty sure that under poor ventilation the system will display this error even though there is no 'flaw'. this could be a design flaw iguess because they did not anticipate where these units were going to be housed and how they were going to be used. A warranty extension of this kind is unheard of in the industry, that shows a lot of commitment on MS's side.

What is the deal with the out of box failure rate of the PS3 by the way. I had to go back to the store 3 times to get one that worked. My friend on Canada had to take 5 trips.

I think both MS adn Sony rushed their product to the market way too much.

Off the Grid reviews RoboRally

I love this game. Luckily I have a copy of it and the Armed and Dangerous expansion. I just wished they would put it back in print, my current set is starting to show a lot of wear. My friends and I have put a lot of mileage on this game.

It is incredibly hard to find these days and if you do find a copy it is usually ridiculously expensive.
