Flashpoint: Sony Style in Boston -- Things go wrong

Nov 17th 2006 7:11PM (Joystiq)
That's extremely unfortunate for the poor souls who waited outside in the rain. Even if it was their choice to do it, it really is unfortunate. Sigh.

Wish stuff like this didn't have to happen.

Joytech to put cheap plastic crap on your Wii remote

Nov 17th 2006 5:37PM (Joystiq)
I actually think it's great. The racket will feel more top heavy, for example, which a tennis racket should. Dunno about the steering wheel, but the charger station and such also is welcome.

I don't think it's crap at all. It's certainly a whole lot better than some of those attachments for the old GBA SP and such that came out years ago. The colours match too.

Playing Dirty: Women on the Wii

Nov 16th 2006 4:35PM (Joystiq)
It was a good read, but I think the author has focussed on women when they are not the primary focus.

Nintendo's pitch is to provide a console, *INCLUDING* women. They are not targetting just women, but everyone. If nintendo is targetting an audience, it's the 'causual gamer', which still includes a lot of men as well as women. The hardcore gamer is often stereotyped as the loner. The casual gamer, however, could be considered one who 'joins in' when there's something interesting to play. In other words, the casual gamer, like a casual smoker, will join in when there is company. Based on the situation of gaming right now, this is where a lot of women might fit in.

I think the article is blown out of context. I'm not dissin' the author cause I understand passion and writing, but there are times when one becomes so fixed on a topic the greater picture (in my example, casual gamer) is missed.

Wii component cables online now, in stores Dec 5 [update 2]

Nov 15th 2006 2:59PM (Joystiq)
mr #16: The 360 core doesn't come with component cables. (nor wifi, or any game packed in for that matter). Get your facts straight.

Anyhow, for those ordering (like myself), get ground shipping. It's way cheaper and is just as fast. It cost me a total of $45.53 Canadian (gst included).

Dude, where's my MP3s (Wii annoyance #2)

Nov 15th 2006 12:41PM (Joystiq)
to #35:

Half-assed? Ever tried the "media" functions on the 360 upon its release? The crappy DVD movie function (really really bad navigation controls!)? Horrible media support (streaming via MediaCenter PC? Only supporting WMV and such?)? How about that mp3 player functionthat has no fast forward option? Yeah, the stuff is there... but it's all half assed. At least with the latest dashboard upgrade they allow you to use an external hard drive (support fat32 only!)... oh but all your videos show up on one huge list that's hard to navigate.

C'mon, the Wii was not marketed as a multimedia device like the 360 and ps3. Heck, the so-called mp3 playing feature wasn't even mentioned but more "found" by folks. Just like how the 360 is undergoing dashboard updates, so will the Wii (thanks to Wii-Connect 24).

Coming to think of it, even the PS3 has issues with some of its media features (but it's looking tons better than the 360 one, even after the latest dashboard update).

The Wii is for gaming first. Yeah, it's not the most powerful hardware with the latest in media functions. The important thing is, it's going to rock millions of worlds out there, including mine.

Wii console manual reveals its secrets

Nov 12th 2006 2:42PM (Joystiq)
Some Idiots who jump to conclusions out there!

As person#25 mentioned, you *DO NOT* have to pay to re-download your VC games in case you lose them. Nintendo has said this time and time again.

Why oh why do you guys jump to so many conclusions in the first place? Dammit I hate this place sometimes.

Careful with those ancient Zelda screenshots! You'll poke an eye out with images that sharp. [update 1]

Nov 12th 2006 5:49AM (Joystiq)
Why oh why are people buggin' Zelda? I just don't get it. It's always been about content and storytelling. Why spoil a pleasurable experience with such shallow topics as graphics/screenshots and such. The twilight realm, for example, looks fantastic but I think it's the surreal art direction that captivates me. It truly leaves room for one's inner imagination to blend in. This allows us to fall into that world on our terms.

PS3's Genji uses HDD to quarter load times

Oct 21st 2006 5:40AM (Joystiq)
Being that there's a hard drive in the damned game machine, why not use it? Caching is good. I figure, you only play a few games at a time. Strange, 3 minutes and you're done... how long do folks wait to download simple demos off LIVE again? C'mon, it's a no brainer, and it's good for you the gamer. Faster=better. Anyone with a *COUGH* modded XBOX can vouch for the advantages. I guess the Genji crew learned from the mod scene. :)

Rumor: First-party Wii games $59.99

Oct 13th 2006 8:05AM (Joystiq)
That's all BS. The games are already $59 here in Canada which means it'll be $49 in the U.S. It's already confirmed in all the preorders, from Zellers, to Toys'R'Us, to Rogers Video, etc.

Why do folks believe these crappy placeholder prices? Do you believe the crap that's posted at Best buy as a placeholder too? C'mon guys, you know better than that!

Wii "hardware is basically a GC," says Miyamoto [update 1]

Oct 4th 2006 2:27PM (Joystiq)
You know, there was a time when people bought new hardware to get the new games. Here's some new hardware (yes related to the old in basic architecture) with some neat games that were not possible on the previous one.

And, make now mistake, Nintendo could not just add a wii-mote to the gamecube. The sensor bar needs a whole lot more circuitry than a mere joystick port, in order to be of any use/accurate. There are lots of improvements to merit the wii as a new machine, independent of the gamecube (ie: console designed for online, greater storage capacity w/ slot load, integrated community and online services, beefier horsepower, etc). Besides, add-ons don't sell, hardware does.

Again, look at how different the games will be. That's what truly matters. Folks are too focussed on hardware and forget that it's the interaction that matters, above all else. We may yet see a return to what gaming is truly about.
