Dec 17th 2011 10:35AM (Joystiq)Don't try to tell me Call of Duty or Splinter Cell are the pinnacle of realism either, which means they don't have any 'flaws'. Call of Duty is based of the Quake engine, which still shows through in its run and gun online gameplay. There aren't many soldiers in the field that use quick-scoping, so that must be a horrid flaw. Splinter Cell is even worse, when you consider the elements they've worked through over the course of the series, such as 3 alarms and the mission's over. From a gameplay perspective, 'features' like that serve to create boring and repetitive gameplay as you muddle your way through the objectives. They luckily ditched that for Chaos Theory.
The point here is that games are different and play differently. Don't just try and tell someone else that they're blind or that a game is horrible just because you don't like some aspects of the game design. Don't label features you don't like as flaws either; if you do that then flaws become highly subjective and suddenly every game has a ton of them. Just let people enjoy their games.
Also, game developers should continually raise the bar and consider what others are doing when designing their games. For example, Kojima has been incorporating things such as more shooter-like mechanics, a free camera, and crouch walking into his games. But that should only be as inspiration and not competition; I don't have to buy either MW3 or BF3, I would rather buy them both and enjoy their different but awesome approaches to gameplay. Why play just Splinter Cell or Metal Gear Solid when you play both for their totally different approaches to gameplay?

Dec 17th 2011 9:33AM (Joystiq)Don't get me wrong, Splinter Cell is a fantastic series (at least the first three were) and just last night I probably spent 4 or 5 hours having a blast in the Spies Vs Mercs mode over LAN. It has great gameplay, and the most forgettable plot ever, delivered by plot devices that are good in theory and boring in execution.
The Metal Gear games are story focused, but the gameplay is also very rewarding and top notch. I still play through MGS1 and MGS2 every now and then, and they never bore more. MGS3 is a bit of cumbersome beast, but those first two and the later entries are all quite good.
Video games are not a competitive business, even with studios like Dice trying to pull that BF3 vs MW3 bullshit. It's up to us as gamers to find what's fun and play it. If you've got loyalties to either a console, or a game, or anything generated by a corporation, then you're naive. We're all just part of a bottom line, so there's no reason to go on a rant about what studios don't do blah blah blah bla. I like the Metal Gear games because they're fun. Who are you to try and tell me they aren't?
Also: If graphics mattered so much to you, then you shouldn't own a console. As every PC gamer knows, consoles are outdated. By a lot.
