Aug 23rd 2006 3:27AM (Joystiq)A look at how the PS3 got to be $600
May 28th 2006 10:53AM (Joystiq)Their new plan that worried me then was to make a system that would outlast the usual 5-year lifespan for console generations. I remember that they stated that they hoped the PS3 would last a full 10 years, because it would help with getting people to adopt a console and not have to start again every 5 years, and Sony would not have to always be working on the next version.
This strategy would greatly slow down graphical upgrades for console games if every company did it, and make the PC a much more advanced gaming system at a cheaper price at both launch and after 5 years. For example:
PC with compareable power at PS3 launch would be upgradeable at about the same price: WINNER=PC
After 5 years and no new PS4, but PC graphics enhancing yearly: WINNER=PC
I can see how it makes sense in a business perspective, but it would kill their product, and with games being the majority of Sony's income, I think this would be a stupid move.
Personally, I will be paying the $600, because I know what the year difference in Xbox development over PS2 development made, and if that holds for the next gen of games, the PS3 is going to be the console of choice for advanced games, and I am a graphics ho. I am sure that Sony will not be as competitive with pricing as Microsoft was with the original Xbox, because Sony does not have as much to prove as MS did 5 years ago.
