BioShock 2 for $49 at Newegg for just 72 hours

I did a double take on this article because I'm used to games being $50 since I buy almost all of my new games on PC and only buy used games for the console 1-2 years after the game comes out.

No dedicated servers or LAN play for BioShock 2

Jan 28th 2010 4:49PM (Joystiq)
Dedicated servers are computers that are set aside for the sole purpose of hosting a server for a game for people to play on. PC players have been used to these for years because they provide an optimal, lag-free gaming experience, and is usually supplied by a data center and paid for by one person, or by a community of people.

Console games generally don't have dedicated servers, and instead are hosted off of the console of the person with either the best connection, or whoever doesn't have access to server hosting blocked. By not having a dedicated server on the PC, control is taken away from the community, and is left in the hands of the developer, who often does nothing with it. Dedicated servers are usually excluded from PC games because the developer wants to keep out piracy, but it harms the PC community in the process (see Red Faction Guerrilla and Gears of War, both for PC, both have matchmaking without dedicated servers, and both have dead multiplayer communities)

Games without dedicated servers are not able to have custom maps or mods, which is a major part of the PC community. When a cheater or hacker plays a game that has no dedicated servers, they cannot be kicked, the players either have to deal with it or leave.
