Giving the gift of games, some guidelines

Dec 14th 2006 12:24PM (Joystiq)
"Parents should be cautioned that videogames can be highly addictive"

"Some [FPS] games are quite realistic and not for the squeamish"

"Games also are rated just as the movies"

"Pussification is ruining our society and will destroy entertainment as we know it unless you raise your children to have the balls to handle FICTION"

Clinton and Lieberman make nice with ESRB ... why?

Dec 7th 2006 9:04AM (Joystiq)
"People have voted for and against candidates for stupider things "

Because we all know that not wanting the government to take their guns and use them to control creative speech is just some crazy stupid idea only nerds and complete retards get behind, amirite?

Kiddie porn trumps video games

Dec 6th 2006 4:22PM (Joystiq)
I want someone to make Equus: The Game. I'd preorder it now for $200 if only to see the unbridled social chaos it would bring about.

EA trying to win back our hearts?

Dec 1st 2006 11:05AM (Joystiq)
No, EA cannot be loved again. The reason is not because they've burned the bridge with gamers or anything like that. Gamers are very fickle and the public at large nowadays wouldn't know idealism if it bit them on the ass, so no one is going to not buy a game they want just because EA is abusive to its employees and its customers.

The reason EA can never rise to be loved again is because they are publicly traded. They do not answer to the marketplace. They answer to investment bankers who run mutual funds. Those investment bankers demand that EA make their profit grow by x% more than it grew during the same period the year before. EA flat out cannot achieve those numbers if it takes any risks at all. One bad project could make it so they only make 20 billion in profit instead of the 21 billion the investment bankers wanted. When that happens, the investment bankers sell their millions of shares of stock, EAs stock price drops through the floor, more people drop the stock in panic, EA goes bankrupt, and flowers can once again bloom. But EA doesn't get loved again.

Xbox 360 isn't actually broken, just misbehaving

Nov 29th 2006 2:12PM (Joystiq)
The red ring of death can come from lots of things, and there are guides to what various patterns mean online. Several of the things could be caused by loose connections. When the 360 is on its side, a loose HD connection is quite likely.

supasta: What makes you think that 360 has a DVD drive with modified firmware?

Study: Violent videogames affect kids' brains

Nov 29th 2006 12:46PM (Joystiq)
The sample sizes they used were below the minimum required to establish statistical significance. That single fact right there completely and entirely invalidates every single thing they saw.

Beyond that, their methodology is not just shoddy, it's downright rigged. Racing games are 'constant', and FPS games are 'punctuated' in terms of needed player attention and reaction. In a racing game, you hit the analog stick the wrong way at ANY time, and you end up in the ditch. In an FPS, the vast majority of the time you'll just end up looking at a wall or walking a bit sideways. It doesn't affect gameplay. Only during firefights are reaction times and accuracy important.

Besides that, I don't know of ANYONE, even the mental rejects that suggest violent games can affect childrens behavior, that claims games have no effect on brain chemistry DURING play. The concern is that it has longer term effects. And this study didn't even try to lie about it like they lied about the experiences during...

Dummy Xbox Live accounts blocked, not banned

Nov 28th 2006 3:37PM (Joystiq)
This is just mean. First they do the entirely brainless approach of limiting content by geographic region, ignoring all people who are interested in other cultures... now they're actively seeking those people out and making them unhappy for no other reason than they want them to be unhappy.

How about this? Internationalize the Xbox Live Marketplace. It desperately needs a redesign anyway (New Releases doesn't know what releases I've seen before? How stupid is that?). Add an International section, and let us with an interest in the "Japan-exclusive" content access it and buy it if we so desire.

Licensing issues? Stop being idiots and buying localized licenses then. Make it known that global licensing is the only thing you're interested in.

Region coding on a service that runs over the Internet is just ludicrous. One of the primary advantages of the Internet is the fact that it makes geography irrelevant. USE that advantage rather than fight it, MS!

100% awesome Naruto footage

Nov 27th 2006 12:18PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Sigh. Who do I have to kill to get one of the Naruto RPG games released over here? These fighting games are BS.

Gears of Wars sells tiger fast, 1M copies in two weeks

Nov 22nd 2006 2:57PM (Joystiq)
And this is all despite the fact that legitimate copies of Gears of War do not work on 360 consoles with Hitachi drives and modified DVD firmware, but the copied version DOES... piracy kills systems, indeed.

Gears of peace: Engadget & Major Nelson Vs. you and your pals

Nov 22nd 2006 1:50PM (Engadget)
Hmmm, I don't get what you mean about ironic? Just because it's a violent game and you want to stop violence in Darfur? Real world violence and videogame violence have as much in common as pancakes and sentient extraterrestrials.
