Ask Joystiq: Hot Topic and Warcraft

haha, how ironic that you mentioned 7/11 selling mmorpgs. I recently visited Taiwan (which is PACKED with 7/11s) and every one of them had WoW for sale. Crazy!

A guide to living a Second Life

how long until this is considered illigal under the new :pier security" act. It is only a matter of time before this is shut down due to the fact that you can "play in your bathroom."

Wiimote controller or Xbox Live? Which is the bigger innovation?

May 4th 2006 2:53PM (Joystiq)
Chris D..

First of all you claim XBL was a huge risk for Microsoft because when they introduced it on the original xBox it was a risk.

XBL was tried and true, and it worked. You may think it was a "risk" to introduce an online service to the xbox when the online revolution for consoles was in mid-swing (can you say socom? Counter-Strike for the ps2?), but I would argue that it was far more of a risk for Nintendo to NOT sell more of its online service than it did.

I will agree with you that XBL innovated how consoles handle online games, but innovated nothing else. MS saw what developers did with programs like The All Seeing Eye, xFire, and Steam and turned it into something gamers could use with thier consoles.

to refute..

"Live is innovative becuase it was completely re thought and implimented - and it works! its not nitsch, its not a fad, and it is and never will be boring."

Under your logic I don't understand how you cannot see the Wii as innovative. You've spammed it yourself here about a thousand times that the Wii is a combination of many different parts that have been "completely re thought" as you put it. Secondly, you really have no idea whatsoever on if the Wii will be dysfunctional, "nitsch", a "fad", or "boring". You also don't know if XBL won't someday itself become one of these.

To close, the WiiMote controler may still just be a CONTROLLLER" (lawl), but the XBL service is still just the INTERNET!!!!!!

I forgive your imminant comment spam Chris. After all, you can't reason with someone who won't use reason themselves.

Dell pretends to understand gamers

I didn't read every comment, so this may have been touched on already. I know for a fact that there are people who wouldn't survive without the garbagewear that comes with these pre-built machines.

I used to work in Best Buy computers, and I can't tell you how horrible it was. You sell computers to people who have no idea what the f**k anything is. And then when you finally do sell them one, they come back in a week later and say they can't figure out how to burn a cd or some stupid s**t.

The garbagewear dvd burning music playing "god aweful" software is what people use when all they want to do is click an icon on the desktop and have it work. Its not pretty, but for the average moron it works.

As for me.. and most commenters thusfar, on the first power-up of the machine I would have the XP disk in formatting the thing.

Sex talk: conference agenda released

Apr 27th 2006 1:17PM (Joystiq)
I agree whole heartedly with Varian.

The conference will serve no other purpose than to give politicians something to point at when they're discussing the "seriousness" of video game's negative effect on children.

This conference is just away to publicise and politicise the topic of sex in video games so that it can be seen as more of an issue than it is.

I want to see the sex in movies conference.

A lucrative new DS feature

Feb 2nd 2006 1:34PM (Joystiq)
lets not forget the gba-gbasp upgrade. Nintendo allowed consumers to do a trade in where the customer only had to turn in their GBA and $30 to get a bran new system.
