Rumor: Will Nintendo punk us with the Wii?

Aug 28th 2006 1:16AM (Joystiq)
What is funny is no one has said that the graphics card or LSI has tapped out yet. I've been looking for this milestone for a while and found know. If the Wii truely is just a faster GC then what stops them from releasing the wii mote for the GC?

Where are you guys getting this "fiter" thing from... it's a shader... Thats what the whole industry calles them... After seeing the new zelda shots and some MP3 footage I'm fine with the graphics but really... It won't be hard to throw in a powerful card to beef things up... 3ghz cpus are only really needed for high res displays. There are some key things the GC needs to do great to trump the other consoles...
Push more polys or use a N-gon quasi Mipmap based poly smoothing tech.
Shaders supporting SSS, light blum HDRI 64 bit light, self shadowing, noraml and parallax mapping,...

As Cool as the cell CPu is even it needed an nvidia chip to make it hum... and no that did not raise the price to high... you forget a PS3 with out a blue ray could be cheaper than an xbox 360... Yet most developers say that even the cell is weak at normal cpu ops due to the crippled controller chip of the cell. We all know that the nvidia chip is running the show for the ps3, this is partly the reason why the ps3 does not currently exceed the xbox360 graphics wise. Nvidia currently has a small lead tech wise on ati and that doesn't show up in game systems...

In theory yeah it could be true... why wasn't it in the dev kit... because it was still being tapped out... Look at when they annouced the mosys stuff... It's about time for the product the be presented now isn't it. Why would the developers of the LSi hint and a long list of break thurs just to give us a OC GC chip. I mean the new zelda looked pretty much done the first times they showed it a long time ago... but notice the difference in the visuals now... Did nintendo delay this because the hardware boys where still tinkering? Even certain games have really advanced lighting systems it seems for an OC GC graphics chip. So if nintendo where to put the nvidia chip in their box what type of graphics would we get then? OK it's to hot of a chip to house in the wii's case... ok Well why not just fuse the gpu and cpu together? I wonder what you get then.... hmmmm Isn't that why Amd bought ATI any way? Then you have IBM and NEC along with Mosys... I'm sorry but there are way too many big names there to discount this rumor. But hey if it's false then what harm will there be? The game will still look great at a great price... PS2 style all over again...

Kutaragi: PlayStation 3 is "too cheap"

May 18th 2006 1:56PM (Joystiq)
Man I saw going to buy a PS3 for a PC or content creation... From what I hear it would be great for that...

I'll just spend my eleven hundred on a Dual FX 4300+ system with a Geforce 7600 in it. I mean sony should really try selling this as a media PC with the bonus of content creation and maybe even blue ray dvd authoring... Throw in some zbrush apps and a solid 3d program from the start and drivers for my wacom and I'm so there. I much more in to using this systems as a way to creat content rather than game on it. For gaming it's aliitle much, even if you add HD movies with it. Now if it came with it's own projector then I would think about it... Maybe they will throw in a Sony HD tv for the loyal customers.

Really I'm not concerned... The Blue ray production price will fall... with time and the cell yeilds will get better one day right...LOL I mean apple had this problem with IBM before but Sony is cooking these chips this time right? Oh well welcome to the nano club of nightmares. I would love to see this system turn into a apple type of product that challenges PC and macs. If this whole things goes under maybe they will have PCI express PS3 cards for pcs! I love the cell chip to death and even the RSX but blue ray... Really is starting to stink things up. With out blue ray this thing could be at a Wii price if they where trying to take the same hit on loosing money...LOL

When you have large screens for your pc and you go to get a HD tv I have a hard time buying one... Unless I'm getting an Apple lcd 30 inch... Thats the only HD tv I need... but a pc will be connected to that? So I need sony to give me another reason to buy a ps3 for over 300 dollars... Unless they are going to release sports blue ray disk then I don't really need HD dvd do i? LOL No one is going to watch a sports dvd also...LOL

Sony needs to just bring this out as a pc, plain and simple... make it a standard and let the OEM go at it... It would be the first PC sold for gaming and movie watching and true next gen content design or customization. This is their VAIO PS3... I won't get one till they do this... I mean I'm typing this in 3200x1600... thats HD to me...

CliffyB's guided tour through Gears of War

Your right Geist it's not FPS... it's more like a lix bag using different aspects of 3rd person first person.

It feel way more like a FPS to me... I tend to focus on what I'm killing rather than my character on screen. Thanks for bring that up though.... This brings up other interesting ideas... Hmmmmmmmmmmm

I want to also comment on how well the games characters are put to gether... There is alot of personilty in this one and the voices are great. The back ground cinematic are great also... Man I hope this one comes to PC... I would love to give this one some levels.

Right now these guys are the normal mapping kings of the industry... MGS is close but they arn't messing with epic right now... This is the game that may make me buy an xbox360 ...

Great job guys... And it's good to hear you have a small team also... I'm really tired of the games that look like a commity made...LOL

Big shout out to the Air brush wizard and tools guy.. you know who you are... Epic has a ninja like team fo' realm....

That aside CliffyB gets my respect for mentioning Bionic commando... I've beat it many time and every time it was fun. It was so simple... so limiting when I first picked it up. Most people never made it past the first mission...LOL But once you got good you felt way more dangerous than spider man. You found new ways to do every thing with just your grapling hook.

I've alwasy wanted to put cover in maps but people would never use it... But the way he's explaining the cover system in this game is going to rock even the idea of smashing into a wall and diving out and into cover is going to be cool. It's funny but when you get good at any action game it quickly become a puzzle game...

This is true of all shoot or get shot games where you are able to dodge fire. It's like digital First person speed chess where you may be in position but only your aim and tactics will complete the kill or the taking of your rook.

So many times I've seen people pull off cool a$$ air moves that you would only see in a old kunfu moive to get a kill or even survive. This is a grunt combat setup... not too many cool air moves yet...

I guest what I trying to say to the non FPS haters is once you get good it's just like playing mario bros one on the nes... with out the warps... from stage 1-1 to the end almost with out dieing... in a really fun FPS you will have big air moments that are fast and not like halo...LOL you will have the skilled seperated and rewarded becuase of their unique skills in timing, game play tackics, quick aiming, and fear-lessness... and the abilty to fill in the needed areas on a team be it... sniper, flag runner or cover man...

Then you put the icing on top of the cake and that is always graphics and the speed of play. It's not as simple as wanting to ride a rollercoaster or see a big action movie full of effects... Thats what the spectators see... Eventually you get off a roller coaster but a good fps shooter always seems to have that great game where you feel like dayum this was like playing a basketball game with jordan from 96...LOL Man that was a trip...

Thats why people still play CS, quake3, Ut2003 and 4... They all offer a flavor to the FPS.. some are super fast some rely on sneaky snipers and other have team vechicle battle groud play... the list goes on.

This is funny... I will bet know of you guys have had the balls to get good at a fps and play it online. Let me tell you it's hard cliffy would probably own you all...LOL But once you do get as good as him or better you will see why the way he was playing is going to open up some many game play doors for true FPS fans.

I'm in NC right now and if I was to go to a pc online arcade I would want cliffyb on my team...

You guys fail to see that when playing a fps shooter online you get some thing that you would never get from AI... Very intense game play... and vendettas against certain players. AI is going to follow the rules... Real players will rocket jump and switch to a rail gun just to take you out, then switch to a shot gun if they miss... You hate them and run for your life if your not good but just to show them your better you lob a rocket right into their face and then rail them...LOL These are the little things you don't get from regular single player games anymore. This is what truely brings you back. This game drips of FPS chess now. It scraps the surface enough to be call the next big thing game play mechinics wise.

Every online player has a personality when playing online. I'm not stroking CliffyB's Wii but he's a good player so if your going to play against or with him then your going to have a good game. Every thing I talked about above you could expect from an in counter with this guy... If your on his level skill wise.

It also pays to have a good gamer show off your game... It makes it look that much better... You wouldn't want a soccer mom showing off the next lambo would you?

Wii impressions: Virtual Console

May 16th 2006 7:46PM (Joystiq)
Some games are not correctly emulated yet... and most people can not get an emulator started or find missing roms or use a renamer. Nintendo is shooting for the main stream player and if every one did have the emulated games they wanted then don't you think it would be alot hard to sell games... because there are way more classic games out there than most of the ps2 line up... The 3d age simply can't compare to the 2d age of gaming in terms of game play. Even with the release of the next gen I still have not seen any game or even a line up thats going to make me stop playing any retroi games...

Hands on with Nintendo's Wii controller

May 16th 2006 7:39PM (Joystiq)
I'm not too worried... this is the same thing that happens with all FPS. Every one has their own settings... Goldeneye was like that and so was and still is all of the Quakes, unreals, and other FPS. This is a chance for newbie comapanies with some talened programers doing game controllers. I expect the arcade veterans publishers who have an fetish for prcise controlls to really get this controller working and then offer there ideas at a price to the other guys.

It would be nice to see what factor five could have done with this... too bad... The system is not out yet and hopefully nintendo tweaks the chip or ethier build up the graphics tricks libary for other developers... I'll admit it was mixed bag graphics wise but controller wise I blame the programers...LOL becuase no other games seemed to have issues... Nintendo took baby steps and it was still successful.

Wii impressions: Madden NFL 07

May 16th 2006 7:16PM (Joystiq)
This is funny... I don't have a problem with the controlls though they always been this jacked up. I would think they would let you use a two wand set up... yes you will loose the analog stick but you could just hike with both wands and point to your reciever with your left hand and throw the ball with your right hand... But maybe just maybe we need to see what actual good players can do with this system... I mean Alot of these reviewers seem to suck...LOL Becuase it sounds like a few of these games will actualy make you get good at them rather than pressing buttons to win.

Wii Impressions: Red Steel [update 1]

May 16th 2006 7:07PM (Joystiq)
Like I said before I would like to see the calibration screen to see what this wii remote can truly do.

Oyeah a true sword fighting game would suck just like fenceing and this is the reason why it hasn't been tried any where else.

Graphics wise... I saw good points but in the demo played on stage. Key things I saw that I need to be fixed to have fun with this game are the look speed some say it was too fast but I found it too slow.... maybe it was the player. Graphics wise... These graphics did not surpase Res evil 4 but from looking at other games like metroid and smash bothers... The Wii was pushins some real polygons around. It seems only some shaders were used... reflection, bump, and particals. But in most of the other games alot more was used and the polygon count seemed to be higher yet no change in frame rate.

Well we have until november to see what the Wii is capable of graphicly. I'm wondering but I havn't done the reshearch but has any of UBsoft's games ever looked better than red steel on the cube? ARE they reusing an old engine? Who knows... The bugs are exactly that bugs... Looks like the programers need time to figure out the best ways to impliment the controller...
