Jan 9th 2012 9:48PM (Joystiq)
Any hope it's because they worked out the legal problems and can include Silent Hill 2's original dialogue track?

Once, but I was tricked.

Battlefield 3 video shows 360 version without HD texture pack

Oct 24th 2011 5:00PM (Joystiq)
@bmassao The Arcade wasn't available at launch. It was released later. At lauch, you have the "core" system, which was like the arcade, except not bundled with anything. The arcade came with a disc of arcade games and a 256-MB memory card. Neither had a hard drive. Microsoft has always sold a model with no hard drive.

Bethesda: Nobody enjoys being 'forced' to sue Mojang

Oct 8th 2011 9:10PM (Joystiq)
If Mojang were making a game called "Elder Scrolls," or something confusingly similar like "Older Scrolls," then Bethesda would have to sure them or risk losing their trademark. However, if there's not a real risk of confusion here, so they're trolling. Why didn't they due Frogster over Runes of Magic 3: The Elder Kingdom? That also used one of their words, yet their trademark is still good.

@HokieKC Just because "Scrolls" isn't trademarkable doesn't mean that it's a violation of the "Elder Scrolls" trademark. This is like if Quaker Oats sued General Mills claiming that Berry Burst Cheerios was a violation of their Crunch Berries trademark because they said "berries."

I got my free games, but was waiting on PlayStation Plus so I could play in late summer when I wasn't so busy. There are plenty of good reasons to wait on it as the longer you wait to start, the later it ends.

Law of the Game on Joystiq: The 'Zombie Suit'

Feb 29th 2008 3:02AM (Joystiq)
@Justin: The whole Romero zombie concept is itself public domain because it originates in the public doman movie Night of the Living Dead. Besides, trade dress has to be registered and this was Romero's only zombies in a mall movie. The whole idea of applying trade dress to media rather than physical things doesn't make any sense.

Toshiba drops HD DVD; Blu-ray wins

Feb 17th 2008 2:17AM (Joystiq)
Blu-Ray is partially owned by Sony, but Panasonic owns a much larger part. Blame Toshiba for the format war. Several members of the DVD Forum wanted to develop a proper hi-def format and brought it up for a vote as DVDs succesor. That format was called Blu-Ray. Toshiba, who owned the lion's share of DVD patents blocked them because they wanted to hold onto their royalty revenue and just cram high-def content onto the same 8.7 GB discs used for standard def. They added additional voting members in order to make sure to have the sufficient votes to block. The developers went ahead and developed it anyway outside the forum and in response Toshiba beefed up HD DVD to be more competitive with higher-capacity discs. The format war was all Toshiba's fault. They could have compromised, like Sony did with DVD, but they didn't.

For those concerned abotu monopolies: HD DVD was controlled almost entirely by Toshiba and Toshiba was essentially the only player manufacter. Blu-Ray was developed in cooperation with many companies and you have a dozen manufactures to choose from. It's no more a monopoly than DVD was.
