Some people (myself included) like the web interface of Gmail much more than Mail.app.

Florida school may trash 200 Macs to go PC-only

Same- I'll take one or two of those laptops as well. Could put them to good use, certainly much better than the dumpster could.

Magic trick developers find the trick is on them

I'm not trying to incite a riot, nor am I'm trying to troll or ask rhetorical questions. If you have some insight, please provide it.

What is the difference between Apple dictating what they want to run on their device and Nintendo dictating what they want to run on the Wii? I mean, you can't play an XBOX game on a Wii or vice-versa. Nobody seems to mind- or do they?

I just don't understand. Apple laid out the rules and developers have to follow them. Nobody ever claimed that the App Store was a democracy- thems the breaks, right?

Apple allows matte screens on 15-inch MacBook Pros again

Aug 11th 2009 10:11AM (TUAW.com)
Good point, but elementary at best.

Apple mass-produces computers on a huge scale. If the larger percentage of the computers have the glossy screen, it costs them money to produce a matte screen for a few customers. It's the economics of scale.

I'm glad they included the option for the matte screen: the better question is has anyone actually seen one? Is it a true matte screen (the softer plastic ones) or a glass one with some sort of matte anti-glare coating?

It's the Feds! FCC quizzes Apple, AT&T and Google about Google Voice apps

Aug 1st 2009 9:33AM (TUAW.com)
Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

What gives TUAW? You keep blasting the FCC for not "getting it" and even at one point say GV ≠ VoIP.

While GV certainly isn't JUST VoIP, international calling certainly IS one of the MAJOR features.

I hope whoever it is that's to blame (Apple, AT&T, or the man in the moon) gets reamed for this.

Fortune: Microsoft about to offer online version of Office for free

Jul 13th 2009 1:32PM (TUAW.com)
Am I the only guy who is working on a dissertation that would not be caught dead using a free online tool to edit probably the most important document of my educational career?

There's just something comforting about having everything contained on my computer and my backups, but maybe that's just me.

Seems to me Google docs (and the like) are a fun way to whip up something simple, but mission-critical docs will likely always stay on the client side (at least for this client.)

Thoughts?

Turn by Turn navigation in the App Store -- from AT&T

Jun 23rd 2009 2:25PM (TUAW.com)
If my calculations are correct, $70/year is still cheaper than $10/month.

Am I missing something here? Allow me to echo the sentiment "what a rip" that everyone else is crying.

TUAW First Look: Twittelator Pro 3.0

Jun 18th 2009 10:10PM (TUAW.com)
Does Twittlelator Pro have a feature to search for Tweeple that are near you?

I love this in Twitterriffic: not available in TweetDeck AFAIK, and that plus the frequent crashes and bugs are a bit of a turn-off for me.
