Vita launch issues in Japan result in apology, software update [update]

Dec 21st 2011 12:12PM (Joystiq)
@King Johngie the Fourth Its mostly the charge that has me annoyed in that part. The other examples you mentioned never had a program that would let you verify them. The Vita will. I understand it doesn't have a UMD. That's annoying, but I can understand it. But when they can verify that you have given them money for a game and still insist on charging you money for it again, that's just wrong.

If they were smart, they would offer this program for free, giving potential customers a big incentive. Instead, its like they're punishing us for the failure of the Go.

@The Aquacharger Thats why I say "Snuck in". Technically it is region free. But only for actual cards; if you get anything from the PSN, you'd have to have an account from that region, and assuming you have a US account, that means you have at least two. And you have to format the entire system every time you change accounts.

@King Johngie the Fourth Stupid? Really? The vita supports them. Sony is giving a way to get the ones we have on UMD for download, but still charging for it, not to mention the games we have that will never be available, which means you either have to get rid of them, or carry around a psp and a vita.

People complain about "On disk" DLC all the time, but charging money for a game you can already prove that you own? Thats a new low.

And as for the multiple accounts, I've paid Sony Japan quite a lot in import games and they could have just as easily tied the account to the card only but tying it to both earns them more money because again, to carry all the games I've bought and paid for I'd need two Vitas.

If none of that applies to you then by all means, buy one and enjoy it. But some of us will effectively lose more than the cost of the Vita itself with their MS level money grabs. Which may not be enough to "boo hoo" over but its more than enough to make us spend our money elsewhere.

I wonder if their apology letter will include "Sorry we're sneaking in region locking, sorry we're charging big bucks for proprietary memory, sorry that a lot of PSP games are unplayable (that were never on the PSN), sorry that we're going to charge you to get games you prove you already own"...

Somehow I doubt it.

Vita can't handle multiple PSN accounts after all

@AyaisMUsikWhore MS and Nintendo never touted region freedom as a feature either, Sony did. And this "one thing" is not the only reason.. they have been steadily killing off the things that used to make them great. I vote with my dollars, which is the only thing a consumer can do. I was on the fence, this just gave me the shove.

@Dcmac I share accounts. I have several PSP games from the US and Japanese regions. To those who only have one account, it doesnt make it any less useful as all. To those of us that have spent real money on those games, its a very big deal.

@AllYourBAcesHigh That would be awesome but they couldn't do that unfortunately. Different companies own publishing rights in different regions so if they made the marketplace truly region free, they'd have to pay royalties for every region someone different has rights in. That would make the price of games skyrocket.

@AyaisMUsikWhore Not everyone would need two, but those of us who have two, and regularly use both, will find this a dead stop issue. Either I have to delete all my saves and reset it every time I want to play a game from the other account, or I have to buy two of them. Neither option is worth it. So I'm sticking with my PSP, till they lock it out too. And if they pull this with the PS4, I'll wash my hands with Sony entirely.

Bleh.. wasnt going to get one at launch, now I probably wont get one period. Definately not untill someone tests it to see which sony Rep is full of it.

PSA: Xbox dashboard update 'slightly delayed' (Update - rolling out to subscribers now)

Meh, not really looking forward to the "update" anyway honestly. I have my fears about how well this Kinect Dash will work without a Kinect.
