Adam Sessler and Jack Thompson debate GTA on NPR

May 2nd 2008 10:05AM (Joystiq)
Zenix:
In the 70's scientists and experts were predicting a polution induced ice age would set humanity back to subsistence levels. In many cases the SAME SCIENTISTS are now predicting gloom and doom due to global warming... except the earths average temperature has bropped for the past two years. This year, so far, seems to be more of the same.

The only constante about global climate is change. Yes we all need to conserve, not polute, be environmentaly responsible, etc. However, one large volcanic erruption inserts more polution into, and has a greater affect on, the Earths atmosphere than humanity currently does.

I don't know your age or scholarly backround, but you seem a bit naive about some aspects of business of academic science (as opposed to military or industrial science). Schools only have so much money to give to scientists. There are far more researchers, and fields of study, than there is money, so schools give this money to the most important scientists, working on the most important, or visible, projects, for a short amount of time. Often only a year or two. After which scientists must reapply for the grant, or get another one.

So, it behooves a researcher looking for a grant to find a subject which requires lots of data, a long time to gather, and draws lots of interest. Like free advertising for the school. What fits these criteria? Hmmm.

Ding ding ding. Global warming has been a cash cow for researchers for over a decade, and will continue to be only as long as people think global warming, or cooling in another 30 years I'm sure, is a hot button issue.

I'n not saying what scientists are TRYING to do isn't important. I do find it exasperating that they still cant predict conditions 10 years from now any more than the weatherman can predict rain a week from now. Yet their findings are still taken as certain truth. Any opinion to the contrary is insane. Yeah. Anyway sorry for the long post. Peace.

"bandeeto, didn't mean to offend you or anything. sorry if i used the wrong words. one of the most important parts of Sikhism is respect of all other religions. so anyways, sorry about that."

I don't think you were dissrespectfull, just using words creatively to make your point. There is no reason to appologize. We have a couple of different view points, and I was trying to use words creatively to make MY point. thank you for your graciouse reply.

"Dumb Americans. I hope you all get blown up and burn in hell"

It's true... just like there are many smart Americans, tall Americans, happy Americans, busy Americans, etc. The same can be said of any large group of people in the world. Read the next sentance (or, gasp, the ENTIRE post!) and you'll see that I wasn't intending to insult the USA or her citizens, of which I proudly am one.

Oh yeah, if by "you all" you mean my nationality, then you're talking about Americans, and you're wishing all Americans would get blown up and burn in hell. Not... very... nice!

"many other white Christians who forcibly converted and killed and conquered millions of people all over the world for no reason."

Many "white" (whatever nationality THAT is) christians killed and conquered all those people for money and power. Also, no country in existence today wasn't borne on the broken corpse of another. Every people had to kill and conquer to make a place in the world. It's ugly but true, and I am highly offended that you would single out two groups to focus on... "white(s)" (of which I am not) and christians (of which I am). I think you should go to a sensitivity class to help you understand how your assertions that certain groups people are mindless violent savages can hurt.

It's unfair that stupid Americans (of which there are many) have made life hard for you. There are just as many decent people in this country. If you're going to be sensitive to your ethnic/sociall group then please don't condemn other people for making comments by making your own. That just shows that everybody does it, and nobody should take it to heart.

"Please Engadget, have some decency and remove that pic so all the stupidity, ignorance, and hate can end."

The only hate I read was "Go f*** yourself Matt, freaking terrorist sh*t." What a genius. Your words... absolute genius. As for stupidity and ignorance, they've been around since the beginning and wishing they weren't is like banging your head against a concrete bunker to get inside instead of using the door. Useless and a waste of time.

The problem with terrorists is in most cases our military can't recognize them untill they're shooting, mobbing, bombing us. At that point it is already too late to neutralize the threat they pose without killing or seriously injuring them... no options. If we can recognize them BEFORE they attack us... lots of options.

At least then we get to chose when and how we kill them. Actually a terrorist is much more valuable alive and in captivity than dead because of any information they may have.

Also, this programm doesn't tell anybody WHO to kill, but identifies those who depend on anonimity in which to plan and carry out acts of terror. Removing anonimity denies terrorists a great (prehaps the greates) ally.

Blizzard vs. gaymers

"Judging the outcome of someone's actions as moral is simply stupid. It's the intentions that count. Otherwise doctors are murderers and anyone that accidentally saved you in the process of trying to kill you is a hero."
***

Funny, "judging the outcome of someone's actions" happens all of the time (in the real world). It's called the court of law, and you'd better be glad that you are oh so increadibly wrong. If our judicial system did convert to judgment based only on intention, then it would be practically impossible to convict anybody.

Also, puttying someone down for having morals is pretty hypocritical. After all, you are judging them because they are being judgemental. If it is wrong for anybody to be judgemental, then how cay YOU judge someone ELSES beliefs, and therefore determine whether they are correct or not?

Furthermore, you, my dear friend, are precluded from having any opinion on anything... ever. Otherwise you would be comparing your personal beliefs (morals) against someone elses, and JUDGING.

Ulsess you don't mind being a hypocrite. Then it doesn't matter what you say. After getting to know you, no one will listen.
