Editorial: 'I'm tired of saving the world'

Dec 29th 2011 11:19PM (Joystiq)
Story is irrelevant. Save the world, save the Princess, avenge a child's murder, these are merely motive which helps to provide the context for the gameplay and motivation for the user, but ultimately matters of "gravitas" venture outside what is necessary for the realm of gaming, and once you venture beyond the necessary, you get into the realm of the obtrusive. Story can be a tumor for gaming, and should not be given undue levels of thought

This is not to say that no story should be given, or that the story should not be done well (e.g. there's a place for good voice acting where appropriate), but at the same time the story should fit the kind of game you want to make, and to provide compelling gameplay at a high level with some form of realism, you need something large-scale to be occurring. Hence; save the world.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is a message in a bottle

Brawl in the Family

Though what the hell is with them putting Chiss in The Old Republic? Unless significant revision has occurred in the Expanded Universe since i read Zahn's "Vision of the Future," where they were supposed to be a vague mystery race, and that should be like 4,000 years or something after the Old Republic, so they shouldn't just be running around all willy-nilly

Nikkei: Paid DLC coming to 3DS starting with new Fire Emblem

@(Unverified)

An expansion pack seems out of sorts for someone like Intelligent Systems, unless we're talking a whole run of trial maps, it would be hard to bolt on to the story in a haphazard way (and 3DS, while it has ample memory for what it needs, could not do large-scale things of that nature)

I'm more favored for extra units, myself, but at low prices only

Getting Mario Kart 7 tomorrow, so for today i think i'll dig up another Mario Kart, but which one...

Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword save files repaired by Wii channel

Dec 21st 2011 9:32PM (Joystiq)
It's the weird thing that if they could do this, why not simply design a "patch channel?" It would have been limited to glitches that were not on the disk (because of the lack of persistent OS) but would have worked for glitches like this that are simply matters of the save-file

PS Vita moves 321K in first week at Japanese retail

@PS1

New Year's is the big holiday in Japan, and the Japanese tend to give cash, not stuff, so the boost would be reflected in early January

New Pokemon game is a Nobunaga's Ambition crossover, really

Although i could stand to pick this up. Might be a unique experience...

Still poking ahead in Skyward Sword, though the end seems to be in sight

The only thing i've consistently disliked about the game are the fights against The Imprisoned, and that is outweighed by many great new introductions

What motion controls could do for JRPGs

Dec 16th 2011 9:11PM (Joystiq)
We're terming JRPGs as something vastly too broad here. Pointer controls could help JRPGs a lot (and we'll likely see that help come into play in Dragon Quest X), motion controls can help more action-y RPG games, though Zelda is in no way an RPG

I will agree that making even simple fights slightly more involved helps you focus more on the game.
