Joystiq Guide: PlayStation 3 firmware 1.80

@27
I agree, it'd be nice if all the games were rendered at the resolution we want (ideally, the same resolution as our TV). We don't have that right now though, but the upscaling from the console does have a few advantages..

It's normally better for the scaling and interlacing/deinterlacing to be performed at the source, in this case the console. There are exceptions, depending on how advanced your HDTV's scaler is, but there's no disadvantage and a probable advantage to having your Xbox or PS3 perform the scaling.

Nice. Hopefully they'll cover TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan...I loved that game.

You just made a complete jackass of yourself in order to point out that the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player has to be plugged in. Did that really warrant all the venom and sarcasm?

Yes, the PS3 can now display 1080p/24hz. Like the 360. It's great news for PS3 owners and let's just be happy with it.

The Xbox 360 can render Xbox games at resolutions the game supported...if the Xbox game didn't have 720p, it won't render at 720p on the 360 (it will upscale).

The beauty of the Xbox 360 is that you can choose which resolution you prefer and all output from the 360 will be rendered (if supported) or upscaled/downscaled (if rendering isn't supported) in that resolution. It sounds like the PS3 now also has this ability (or close to it). Good stuff.

Nintendo Media Summit: Mario Party 8 hands-on (Wii)

Sorry, one more thing..you suggested that the Nintendo 64 finished in 3rd place for its generation. Obviously Playstation was 1st, but who was 2nd?

Congrats, you've Godwinned a talkback about a party game.

I think we can agree all three companies have shown an unhealthy amount of arrogance this generation. Nintendo's sales number back theirs up more than the competition... at the present time. Microsoft has done respectably, and Sony hasn't gotten their momentum yet.

Also...I don't think anybody's hearing something new when you say the Wii is a repackaged Gamecube with a silly motion controller - it's been done to death. At this point, people either agree or disagree, but hearing it one more time isn't going to change minds.

Nintendo could have gone the HD/graphics route and released a $400-600 system similar to their competitors. They chose a different price point and strategy, and we'll have to see how it plays out. The launch is encouraging, but only time will tell if the system has legs.

PS3 network a boon to disease-fighting computations

Whoops, sorry for the doublepost.

Just so we're clear, Idiocracy is a humorous look at the basic premise of dysgenic theory...Hitler's 'solution' is not even in the same ballpark. Please don't godwin Luke Wilson movies :(

And yes, you're paying for the electricity for folding@home on your PS3, just like I am for it on my PC. It's for a good cause, but if the money really is hitting you a little hard and you want some back, keep in mind that you can calculate the electricity cost for the calendar year and apply it as a tax deduction for charitable donation.

Please tell me you're just trolling and aren't actually that ignorant. I mean, to even survive 15 days on infinite mode in Dead Rising, you have to have your 360 on and running for more than 30 hours (and that's if you play nonstop).

Camera support for next Burnout? Why? How?

@3

The innovation/gimmick of the game is that instead of selecting the card from an on-screen menu, you physically put the card in front of the camera. Would you really say that's an innovation? You're kind of swinging at shadows.
