When possible I try to avoid display copies entirely. After all, for the few copies that have been opened, there are ten times that amount in the display case behind the check-out and even more in the back.

Also, considering that I'd only save $5 on my $60 purchase if they slapped the used sticker on it, I really don't care. Now, if we were talking a $20 difference, I'd be outraged. But I'm not going to get my blood to a boil and spit e-rage over $5.

Kenny, normally I would agree with you about your "blog" vs. "hard news" assessment, but it's important to keep in mind that Kotaku is run by a former newsman -- one who never shys away from reminding his readers of this fact at any and every given opportunity. As far as I'm concerned if they want to act like a news site, then they should be treated like a news site.

As for the story itself... non-news. It's a practice the company has been doing for at least a decade (I remember Babbages and FuncoLand used to have policies like this) and it obviously hasn't hurt their sales. Hell, as far as I care if the game works and everything is intact (manual, scratch-free disc, etc.) I really don't care if some pimply-faced employee takes it home for a weekend.

This story is simply Kotaku smacking the hornet's nest, feigning some kind of outrage to generate hits on a slow weekend.

In other words: Typicak Kotaku fare.
